"I just didn't want to see it close," said Nalley, a jazz vocalist. "Here you see some really, really good talent. You see them in an intimate setting.
" When the couple reopened Pearl's, they brought a 1930s feel to the place. A vintage crystal chandelier illuminates the darkly-lit room. Huge red and black drapes adorn the walls.
Bay windows showcase the musicians as they hit each note, causing people to stop in their tracks on Columbus Avenue. Every night is something different at Pearl's. The current schedule includes Jonathan Poretz (today), Nalley (Friday through Sunday and Tuesday), CJO Big Band (Monday), Veronica Klaus (Jan.
25) and Babtunde Lea (Jan. 26-28).
"Once we moved to the present-day Jack London (Square) location back in 1997," owner Kaz Kajimura said, "the whole facility changed." When you enter the building, the Japanese restaurant is to your right while the Jazz House, a semi-circular-shaped venue, is to your left. Cocktails and some food are served in the intimately lit hall with its cabaret-style seating.
Yoshi's is known for booking the best jazz artists in the world; McCoy Tyner is in residence each winter. The current schedule includes Avance (Tuesday), Brian Auger (Wednesday), Kenny Garrett (Jan. 25-28), Pieces Of a Dream (Feb.
1-4), Pat Martino (Feb. 8-11), and Branford Marsalis (Feb. 12-15).
