Every day except Wednesday, two shows per night Located in North Beach, this club had closed before Steve Sheraton and Kim Nalley picked up the lease in 2003.

"I just didn't want to see it close," said Nalley, a jazz vocalist. "Here you see some really, really good talent. You see them in an intimate setting.

" When the couple reopened Pearl's, they brought a 1930s feel to the place. A vintage crystal chandelier illuminates the darkly-lit room. Huge red and black drapes adorn the walls.

Bay windows showcase the musicians as they hit each note, causing people to stop in their tracks on Columbus Avenue. Every night is something different at Pearl's. The current schedule includes Jonathan Poretz (today), Nalley (Friday through Sunday and Tuesday), CJO Big Band (Monday), Veronica Klaus (Jan.

25) and Babtunde Lea (Jan. 26-28).

The elder statesman of Bay Area jazz venues, Yoshi's has been in operation at various locations since 1985.

"Once we moved to the present-day Jack London (Square) location back in 1997," owner Kaz Kajimura said, "the whole facility changed." When you enter the building, the Japanese restaurant is to your right while the Jazz House, a semi-circular-shaped venue, is to your left. Cocktails and some food are served in the intimately lit hall with its cabaret-style seating.

Yoshi's is known for booking the best jazz artists in the world; McCoy Tyner is in residence each winter. The current schedule includes Avance (Tuesday), Brian Auger (Wednesday), Kenny Garrett (Jan. 25-28), Pieces Of a Dream (Feb.

1-4), Pat Martino (Feb. 8-11), and Branford Marsalis (Feb. 12-15).

Also look for Yoshi's to open a San Francisco outlet in August.

Jazzschool does double duty as a school and performance center. Or, as executive director Susan Muscarella put it, "one-stop shopping for jazz.

" The Jazzcaffe, the Bassment bookstore, a small performance area and classrooms are all housed downstairs in the school Founded in 1997 and located in downtown Berkeley, Jazzschool provides jazz fans the opportunity to watch great musicians, both established and up and coming. The current schedule includes the Pat Carroll Quartet (Friday), Natasha Miller Ensemble (Sunday), John Stowell and Mike Zilber (Feb. 2) and Taylor Eigsti (Feb.
