Westwood Country Club or more formally, Westwood Country Club of , was founded in October, 1907 in the old Columbian Club by a group of men who felt that the time had arrived to form a country club in what was then the third largest city in the United States. Land was chosen in the then distant suburb of Glendale in , and construction commenced in 1908.

The next year the clubhouse was ready for occupany and the 18 hole golf course was complete. The club prospered and soon contained 400 families. In 1927 it was determined that the Club's families, rather than moving to the southern central part of St.

Louis County had moved due west to what is now known as the Central West End of the City of St. Louis and to the towns of Clayton and Ladue, immediately to the west of the City. As a result, in 1927 farmland was purchased approximately 12 miles to the west of the city line at the intersection of Ballas and Conway Roads.

Originally, the new facilities consisted of a golf course consisting of 27 holes, six tennis courts, a riding stable and a large Maritz and Young designed clubhouse. The cost for the land and construction approached One Million Dollars. Since that time the club has prospered and today is generally recognized as one of the four principal country clubs in the metropolitan area, the other three being St.

Louis Country Club, Bellerive Country Club and Old Warson Country Club. Although the membership currently does not favor holding major golf tournaments at the Club, the Western Open was held at Westwood in 1952. Lloyd Mangram won the tournament.

The clubhouse was thoroughly remodeled in 1994-95 and the golf course has been redesigned and rebuilt over the ten years beginning in 1995. The tennis facility currently consists of 9 clay and 3 hartrue courts. The swimming complex was completely rebuilt and expanded in 2003.

In 2006 the club had approximately 700 members. Westwood prides itself on being a generational family club as opposed to a business or corporate club. As an example, all classes of members have the same privileges and there are no social memberships.

Conduct of business on club premises is strongly discouraged and in keeping with traditional fine club policy, it is against club rules for any money to change hands on club premises. For the past 98 years its members have played a prominent role in the life of the St. Louis business, educational and cultural communties.
