rock the dub

I've been doing a lot of thinking about what I wanted to do for V-Day this year, seeing as this is the first V-Day I'll be blogging ever. I figured, gifts are always a good gesture, and the best gift I can give is the gift of music..

. there's going to be a SPECIAL rock the dub treat tomorrow, but there are some songs I felt needed to be highlighted, and they ended up focusing on Lauryn Hill, one of the oft-forgotten heroes of R B and Hip-Hop. I mean, we all know her meteoric rise and surprising fall/disappearance from the limelight, and I don't want to dwell on that, for I'll just get upset for the lack of her voice in the mainstream music scene, but I still love her music.

Her words, her soul, she just poured everything into her music, and nothing was as telling as her songs about love. You know she had some deepness going on when it comes to love, in all facets. So, today, I wanted to share with you guys a few of my favorite Lauryn Hill tracks and videos (if I can find them!

) that accompany, with some words to go with them...

01/Lauryn Hill " " [taken from , she breaks down a relationship all of us have had: one where you hate this person so much, but you love this person so much that you end up hurting yourself just to keep them around. I think The Sopranos called it "Amour Fou", one of those undying loves, all encompassing, and all consuming. Not a healthy thing @ all, but when Lauryn sings it, it's timeless.

My wife's favorite track off Miseducation...

btw.]

02/Lauryn Hill ft. D'Angelo " " [this is one of MY favorite Lauryn Hill tracks of all time. Very seductive, soulful number featuring the boy D'Angelo, just riffing on all the craziest shit that could go down, but in the end, even if that shit is poppin' off, it doesn't even mean a thing, because you have that one person.

Possibly one of the simplest, yet most beautiful displays of that theme I have heard in my life. Just a great song, from two artists who were in my King and Queen spot 8, 9 years ago..

. and where are they now?]

03/Lauryn Hill " " [this is one of the tracks off of the set she did, the one everyone dissed her for, because she sat there pouring her heart out with her guitar and her thoughts.

I mean, I personally feel a connection when I hear these songs, because they show the creative process in action, which I love seeing, whether it's Jay-Z or Busta Rhymes being . The song seems to deal with finding love after being hurt for so long, and the river of emotions that cascade down when you really realize what's going on. That guitar is on point, I wish she did this in the studio with a nice, subtle drum underneath.

We can dream, can't we?]

04/Refugee Camp All-Stars ft. Lauryn Hill " " [this is my personal fav.

Lauryn track of all time. I remember buying Miseducation..

. and hoping this cut was on it, as a bonus or whatever, but my copy did not contain it. (it wasn't until years later that I realized I had to either cop the Love Jones OST or one of the singles to get it.

..) It was all over the radio that summer, I remember I was dealing with this female who seemed to be into me but only when no one else was around.

She was big on making things feel one way when we were alone, but forgetting me when she got a phone call or when she was out. I got over it, but that shit hurt after a while. In any case, this track helped soothe my soul, from that soft guitar, complete with the noise of the fingers stroking the strings to that laid back beat.

When the beat switches up, its MURDA! True Refugee Camp stylee on this one. That video was kind of ill too.

..]

Finally, I leave you guys with a track Talib Kweli wrote for Lauryn, simply titled " ", which is a letter that he wrote specifically for her, but many of us feel the same way. No more words to describe it, really.

..

Ah, here are a few extra video pieces of Lauryn performing:

"Motives Thoughts", performed LIVE on Def Poetry

Got another nice selection of cuts for you.

.. some old, some new, some borrowed, but all dope.

Let's just skip the prelims and get into it.

DNB
01/Redeyes Mutt " " [new, soulful DNB from . Two of the new school of DNB production's shining stars link up for some cross-Atlantic funk.

]

02/Visionary " " [I only included this to big up Visionary's new label, Rock Groove, and to crack up at him sampling some Sly Robbie from a few years ago. I see you, Marcus!]
03/Pentagon " " [from the new, Future Sound of Tokyo EP out on Hospital.

Loving the organ work on this one.]

04/Icicle " " [new one from the Hospital offshoot, Med School. Icicle really bringing the subfunk on this one, I'm impressed.

]

05/Viral Essence " " [I see posting on DOA all the time, and I know he's a fan of rock the dub, but I had no idea he brought the DNB so nasty! Big up for the free download, and congrats on winning the !]
06/Marky Bungle " " [you know what to expect before hearing this, and you get it.

Sultry vocals, BIG bass, and some deep grooves. Vibin' tune.]

07/Rufige Kru " " [why this track sounds like J Majik's "Your Sound" is confusing to me, but I love the feeling all the same.

That sound in the intro always sounds like a sunshower to me.]

Hip-Hop/Rap
01/Joulz Il " " [you read , now peep this gem off the mixtape. True school shit man, shouts to 5 Starr Fam.

]
02/Young Gunz ft. Ma$e " " [I hope the Young Gunnaz don't have a new LP coming. This beat is ridic though!

]
03/Sean Price " " [More Jesus Price mania. Loving that Reggae-bop in it.]
04/Freeway " " [gotta love that new Freeway.

Not sure when/where this one is dropping, so grab it now. Also, check out this mixtape, hosted by Freeway (shouts to and for this one). I wish I could rhyme in that annoying ass voice every now and again.

Peep him speaking about transporting that weight.]
05/Ghostface Killah " " [from that Mathematics compilation of Unreleased Wu Tang joints, Ghost goes in over one of his dead homies. I love that sample.

]
06/Cormega ft. Styles P " " [anything with Styles on it is listed, that's my word. Speaking of which, shout out to Rizoh for the new Styles/Akon track.

]
07/Chubb Rock " " [gotta the kids, no? Classic Chubb Rock single, probably one of my favs from the fast-rap days. He used to groove and everything.

]
08/Prodigy ft. BG " " [I can't help it, I'm waiting for HNIC2. You know you love that "One Love" rework too, right?

Gotta big up the Young Black Entrepeneurs. ]
09/Cassidy ft. Beanie Sigel Fabolous " " [you can't hate on their skills.

I love the old school feel of this one, from the classic boom bap to the fucking back and forth Cass and Beans do. HOLLA!]
10/Keith Murray " " [Mr.

Murray raping Lupe's "I Gotcha", which I just love. Hot beat, hot spit. End of.

(he also did the same thing to " " and " ")]

Did you guys check out this 50 Cent that he's done against Cam'ron? I just don't get it -- the track is garbage, there's a fucking gun with pink diamonds and "50" on the grip, and these guys are in a fucking GARAGE, standing on quads? At least the Ruff Ryders would take their vehicles on the road.

.. the talk at the end is priceless, but 50 comes off looking dumb.

What good does this serve? (shouts to Rafi at for hitting me with this link)

I also heard that Cam'rom has a dis track out at 50? Someone link this to me if it's available.

..

If you guys are looking for some sick DNB sets, check out the DPD from this morning.

With the Colts winning, I can happily say I want them to win. Even if Kanye Common wrote a pretty hot track showing their for the Bears.

Decent game, that rain is fucking up some of the plays. I love close football games though, those shits really get your blood pumping.
For those wondering, the shuffle is late, I know.

Nappy and Cousin Nick came by last night and we had a few beers and a load of laughs. I am going to work on it tomorrow, though, so expect it by tomorrow night.
That is all.

!

Another week down the hole..

. and what an interesting week..

. wow, that was crazy unbelievable eh? LOL.

In any case, I have a load of music to hit you with; let's stop the nonsense and get invovled:

01/Omarion " " [taken from Nappy's , this one is possibly the most beautiful mix he has done. They pianos Tes La Rok used, that bassline - it just vibes so well with not only Omarion's vocals, but the whole vibe of his lyrics. Check it out.

..]

02/J Past Donnie Blake " " [Taken from J Past Donnie Blake's album, J drops 3 of his dopest instrumentals underneath the classic 2 Pac/Big L/Biggie Smalls gem of a track, "Deadly Combination".

Nice mix.]

03/Birdman Lil' Wayne " " [I can't help it; I see all the time, and Weezy's first verse always makes me laugh, esp. when he gets into that "my rag always red, just like when them ho's bleed".

.. ridic.

]

04/Limewax " " [you gotta love . Dylan this is never getting a proper release, and there might be MORE Freak stuff dropping on MP3 in the future..

. HEAVY TUNE BTW, not for the faint of heart..

.]

05/Stephen Marley ft. Damian Marley Buju Banton " " [big track.

Told you guys about this last week. VH1 Soul still rinsing ..

. sans Buju, for some reason. Loving that beatbox/dancehall hybrid.

]

06/Die Clipz " " [Die Clipz bring back that old double bass sound for this one. Why, who knows, but they seem to link up and bring that revival sound. The flipside is the , which is kind of dumb if you ask me.

]

07/Breakage " " [long awaited 12" from Breakage on Digital Soundboy. Very heavy dub stylings on this one, with some nice snare hits. Deep vibes on this one, a step out of the normal dancefloor ready grooves, which is great for the label.

]

08/Bass Clef " " [taken from 's , this one rocks loads of 808 sounds inna dubstep/grime zone, which works very well. It's actually a lil more straight up Dub, wacked out, than anything else. Don't sleep.

]

09/Gridlok " " [Gridlok came correct with the of his Break The System LP, and this is probably one of the more interesting numbers on it. It comes on as straight up fuzzbox downtempo stylings, but then delves deeper, into some grimey, amen-smashing techfunk. Honestly, I liked pt.

1 of this LP much more, but this LP does have its moments.]

10/Mr. Vegas ft.

Lexus " " [that "Taxi Fare" chorus shit kills me. Dancehall MCs and singers have such a mastery of melody, its crazy. It doesn't hurt to have this Mission Impossible/Knight Rider guitar sounding thing in there.

I had this on repeat yesterday morn. I hope Jitesh digs the dancehall CD I made for him..

.

11/Tube " " [I don't expect a lot of you to know who Tube is, or have heard his 1997 CD , but back then I was all about the Jungle Sky/Home Entertainment labels. His CD was pure jungle noodling, but had that IDM twist to get it out on HOE.

This one, I rocked the shit out of this track when I was at LaSalle. There was an alley not too far from the tennis courts that we dubbed "Crack Alley" because it looked straight out of the Trenton crack dens..

. anyways, I was bouncing to this track and created a dance I cannot remember called the "Crack Alley Shuffle". Those were the days.

.. Anyways, this one is a hectic number.

Has a sick groove, but you gotta get into it first. Get committed lol.]

12/Joulz Il " " [this is from current from Dallas, TX, Joulz Il.

Interview with him is DONE and coming to rock the dub NEXT WEEK. This is more of a club banger, but he has a load of other tracks for you to dissect. Shouts to ; we teasing you for next week.

..]

___

Check out some dope mixes from guys like Redeyes, Code, Martsman, Chris INP and Kuttin Edge over at at .

___

If you are looking for Hip-Hop mixes, check out from J. Past Donnie Blake. Also make sure you grab that from Stones Throw.

I'll have another dope mix for you next week, just haven't peeped it yet.

___

For some Hip-Hop beef/drama/album sale talk, check out from NahRight. Anytime 50 Cent is on Hot97, it's a treat, and this one might go down in the record books: not only did he discuss Koch shit with both AND , but then Jim Jones to plug everything, including an "urban " he's supposedly starring in.

Ew.

Finally, I want to shout out , AND for lacing the blog world with those AWESOME remixes of Nas' "Where Are They Now"; the " " features the following MCs: Grandmaster Caz, MC Shan, Raheem ( ), Doctor Ice ( ), Kangol (UTFO), Kool Moe Dee, Sha Rock ( ), Tito ( ), Lique (Isis of ), Dana Dane, Pebblee Poo Just Ice. The " " features the following: Redhead Kingpin, The Original Spinderella, Rob Base, Father MC, Monie Love, Mike D (of the ), EST (of ), Positive K, Das EFX, Lords of the Underground, Dres (of ).

Finally, the " " features the following: Breeze, Kam, King Tee, Candyman, Threat, Ice-T, Sir Mix-A-Lot and the Conscious Daughters, with DJ Bobcat on the cut. You gotta respect that. Nas made me eat my words about "Where Are They Now", or he just read and did what I asked him to.

___

Since Nas gave the MCs some, I figured, why not give the producers and DJs some? So for this week's FINAL THOUGHT, here are some vids of how the Hip-Hop DJs and producers get down:

Pete Rock on the MPC2000XL:
Well, back in , I started up the , my blog dedicated soley to "upfront DNB news". My ideas behind DPD was to try and fill a void that is obviously in the DNB realm: a spot where true, constantly updated DNB news can be found.

Has it been a success? Compared to , not really: with averages of under 30 hits a day, its not really having the success I imagined then. Do I think it should be doing better?

Mos def...

I also know that Rome was not built in a day.

In any case, I want to highlight some of the gems and jewels, the big things that have been going down over at the DPD:

  • The FIRST spot to give you exclusive news on Perpetuum's ..

    .

  • My " " series, which highlights the best and brightest mixes from some of the nicest DJs in the scene..

    .

  • My " " series, letting you know some of the FREE, 320KBPS MP3 gems that the illest producers have given away..

    .

That's just some of the gems we are giving to the masses over at the DPD. I want to start bringing you exclusive articles with some of the hottest producers, DJs and label heads in the scene.

.. I am just trying to figure out the best way to package it.

More info on that when it develops.
So, check me out. For you RSS heads, is LIVE.

Even if my counter only shows another 10 hits per day, hopefully more heads will start to see the shine we are giving to the DNB community. And if you have any news bits/mixes/free DNB MP3 links or whatever, !

So I don't know if I got that job I interviewed for last Friday - should be hearing today about it.

.. I hope.

Job market is a cold bitch these days - seems like I'm putting my resume out everywhere, and for one reason or another, a nig can't get in. I got them BEATS, though. Peep game:

Various:

01/Perpetuum "Urban Afterglow VIP" [dubplate status, sorry.

not sure when this will be out, but if/when it drops, grab it. Perp steps up 's sultry feel with some aggresive drums, turning the sweet love-making to some sweaty, funky fuckfest fun. Holla.

, btw...

]

02/Styles P ft. Sheek Louch " " [nicely done track, even if Sheek only does the choruses. D BLOCK!

]

03/Sean Price " " [Sean Price doesn't stop. From Jesus Price, Superstar, which should be out next week..

.]

04/No I.D.

ft. Dug Infinite Syndicate " " [One of my favorite underground Hip-Hop cuts of all time. If you aren't up on No ID, you should be.

.. or you probably are.

He not only produced Common's "I Used To Love H.E.R.

", he did a lot of Common's early shit. Check out about him..

.]

05/Gym Class Heroes " " [I only knew these cats from that has been getting much burn in the last couple of months, but I got intrigued and grabbed a few of their discs. Interesting stuff, at times, even if dude has a fucking .

This one is really smooth. Not my usual cup of tea, but I like this track a lot.]

06/Trae ft.

Lil' Boss " " ["Trae da truth" kills it over that classic Dr. Dre beat. Check that 2xCD set, it's .

]

07/Slim Thug " " [you guys should already know about those I told you about earlier this week. Its funny how the original had bounce, but the dubstep brings in a new element. You can't tell me these shits ain't proper.

]

08/Redman " " [only version of this being passed around is a CLEAN one, so forgive me, but Redman murders this beat. His flow is that shit, most cats can't even get with it like they should. Where's his LP at?

!!?

!?]

09/Raekwon " " [I can't place the original sample in this, but I know I know it.

This might be the first piece of the OB4CL2 LP...

we'll see.]

10/Prodigy " " [nothing much to say about this one, aside from the fact that P + ALC = QUALITY. Can't wait for that Return of The Mac.

]

11/Little Brother ft. Talib Kweli Mos Def " " [some Mick Boogie mix CD shit from a few of the underground's most well-known niggas. That beat is slick, gotta love 9th with his sampling.

Mos rocks it everytime over a tight beat, so you can't front on that. Who said Mos rhymes 2nd is crazy, though..

.]

___

You guys know Disco D recently, so to some of his productions. RIP.

..

___

For a final thought, I figured I'd mix things up a bit:

50 Cent "Ski Mask Way" [prod.

by Disco D]:

Word. Got a job interview later on today; wish me luck. Check these beats, buy them if you got a buck (or dload if I got a link).

Hip-Hop/Rap:

01/J Dilla "Wild" [from the forthcoming reissue of Ruff Draft dropped on Stones Throw soon. All about the lil boy in the chorus with his "come on feel the noise" shit.]
02/Kool G Rap " " [what's more ignorant than that title?

New G Rap LP dropping soon...

]

03/Raekwon ft. Mathematics " " [taken from , Rae namechecking mad weed references in this one. Where is his album?

( )]

04/Trae ft. Styles P " " [lovely track. -- very deep, somber tracks.

I slept on Trae's lp and now I need to give it a once over...

]

05/KRS-One "Nas Tribute" [like , what does he mean by beef between Nas Jada...

who knows. Marley Marl produced, sick track.]

06/MC Serch " " [shouts to Serch, he's always been the man.

From his , this track is bananas. Conscious, but it also has that head snapping beat. Can him and Doom possibly link up and recreate some of the old school days?

]

07/Swizz Beatz "It's Me Bitches" [Swizzy sounds like fucking Fatman Scoop or DJ Kool on this one...

don't know if that's good or bad, but that beat is ready to have some shorties breaking their backs in the club.]

Drum Bass/Jungle:

01/KJ Sawka " " [if you're not up on KJ, check out from earlier this week..

. BANANAS!]

02/Dylan Skitty " " [from Dylan's new label, , this one is a dark dub damager.

I swear, with tracks like this and "Preacherman" from last year, I think Dylan wants to drop a Deadly Dub album lol. Peep the rewind sounds from Dylan's "Junglism" days..

.]

03/Electrosoul System " " [first of 2 Lomax remixes featured this week. Loving that bass in this one.

.. danceable, but deep, kind of like when those Cambridge boys drop the darker styles.

]

04/Autumn " " [Lomax took my fav track by the Autumn crew and made it smooth. Not that the original was a slouch, but this one is a nice revamp for a new year.]
05/Dub Alley "Sheltered Gangsta" [sometimes, I just need some mindless DnB to tide me over.

..]

06/The Funktastics " " [not sure who the Funktastics are, but I've been rocking all week.

Both sides.]

07/Phace " " [Psycho is , IF YOU CAN FIND IT, and it is fucking SICK. this is my fav so far - I'm sure I'll have a new fav next week.

Review coming soon - where, who knows...
