STIRRING SEA SONGS: Billow, surge, storm and spray: Elgar's Sea Pictures, for mezzo and orchestra, captures the ocean's all. It's a shame this 23-minute cycle of five songs, gorgeously orchestrated, is virtually unknown on these shores. It gets a glorious performance here by the English mezzo Sarah Connolly, whose timbre is reminiscent of the retired Janet Baker's, but more liquescent, the phrases more elegantly turned.
Ms. Connolly's upper register soars stirringly, but she descends to surprising low notes with no break or bark.
DOGGEREL DITTIES: Although a longer work, also including chorus, The Music Makers is from a lower drawer of Elgar's output.
Arthur O'Shaughnessy's doggerel couplets With wonderful deathless ditties/We build up the world's great cities advance the dubious notion of artists as the world's unacknowledged legislators. The music has its glories, to be sure, but the conspicuous quotations from the Enigma Variations and Violin Concerto are corny.
BOTTOM LINE: Simon Wright conducts both works most sympathetically, with good response from the Bournemouth forces.
Sonics are good in Sea Pictures, a bit congested in The Music Makers.
