MURMURS OF FAITH: Switchfoot doesn't really hide its Christian music background, but neither does the San Diego quintet brandish its belief like a religious icon. Instead, Switchfoot intermingles faith and doubt (a yin-and-yang pair) with familiar pop-prettified rock. The band's transition to the mainstream came with 2003's breakthrough album, The Beautiful Letdown, and 2005's Nothing Is Sound.
But the semiburied spirituality hasn't entirely distinguished the band from its more materialistic peers.
DESIGNED EVOLUTION: Oh! Gravity could change that, albeit more by musical diversification than by devout amplification.
From the polished rowdiness and righteous confusion of Amateur Lovers to the jittery jangling and dreamy insomnia of 4:12, Switchfoot expands its repertoire with both the artistic interest to experiment and the commercial caution to keep the audience it has gained. The band's moral earnestness forms the steady center and pivot of that balancing act.
BOTTOM LINE: The radio-friendly allure of Oh!
Gravity exerts an undeniable pull.
