160-08:005 Reasons to Learn Music TheoryIf you thought music theory was a waste of time and not necessary to further your musical goals, then read these following 5 reasons why this is not true. br / br / 1.Read sheet music: Being able to play from any piece of sheet music.

Well it may be hard to play BUT you can read it! br / br / 2.Be able to transpose: Say you are playing a piece from the sheet music you can now read but you think it sounds too high or too low, or just not right.

Well now you can move it into a new key and play at a better singing. br / br / 3.Be able to modulate: You will be able to, with a few quick moves of the fingers, move your music into a new key with a succession of notes so pleasing to the ear it will bring a smile to your listeners faces.

br / br / 4.It will increase your skill in improvising: Enough said. br / br / 5.

Knowing music theory will help you recreate the sounds you enjoy in your favorite songs. Those fabulous chord progressions. The parts that give a song that certain sound.

Gospel, Contemporary etc. br / br / To learn music theory you don't have to become a scholar on the subject. Just at least learn the basics.

Getting a good music theory book and spending a few minutes a day reading from it and doing any included exercises can jump start your music playing. br / a href="http://a1articles.com/article_18791_48.

384-08:00See The MusicIt's not all about the sound br / br / You know the phenomenon, everytime you hear music playing in the background you think about the clip associated to the song. br / br / Many years ago, music was just about sounds. Skilled people with beautiful, at times selfmade, instruments entertained other people.

Back then, music was a gift. br / br / But with the introduction of MTV and various other tv-broadcasters, clips are now a must for artists. If you don't have an attractive, high-tech clip you know you'll fail on the billboards.

People associate these clips to the quality of the music. If the clip they see is bad they'll stop listening to the song and turn off the screen. br / br / Sexy girls dancing with little clothes on, rappers acting tough, .

.It's all been done before. Artists now look for computerized video images, with special effects which match with the sound they produced.

It sweeps the watcher along for about 3 minutes, enough time to hear the song and perhaps like it. br / br / Music needs the images, but needless to say the images definitely need the music. You could even say that music videos are a modern version of opera.

In an opera, you have music and acting together as a package. It tells us a story, just like most music videos do. As we all are curious at times, people tend to like stories.

Makers of music videos know this and try to make a story with their music videos. br / br / br / The story symbolizes the music: if a song sounds sad, the story will not be a happy tale. br / br / br / In the future, artists will have to keep on spending much time in developing their attractive clips, perhaps even more time than they dedicate to producing music.

br / br / br / So I'll give you a good tip: don't always see the music, hear it.. br / br / br / Webmaster of http://www.

000-08:002007-02-20T23:35:09.560-08:00How To Buy A Pawn Shop Guitar The Safe WayThere is something about pawn shops. In fact, some people recorded whole albums about them.

As a man, I think it’s the smell. Seriously. Next time you walk past a pawn shop, walk in and take a big huge sniff.

It’s the smell of a potential bargain, a possible rip off. Pawn shop hunting is the modern day civilised hunting expedition. br / br / On a recent hunting trip I managed to trap a PRS SE Single Cut Soap bar Model.

It’s an SE, so it’s a Korean model. I had a look online and it lists for about 700 pounds, so it’s still a bargain. br / Basically, I was looking for a cheap guitar case at the pawn brokers because I’m one case short these days, and as I was leaving I saw it in the window.

I came home, asked the better half if I can get guitar number seven and she said ok, because she knows how much I want a PRS, and [suck up mode] because she is the most lovely person in the word [/suck up mode]. br / I went back up to the pawn broker, and asked for a play. It was awful.

Absolutely unplayable. He said he had it in there for a while and that it had been reduced because for some reason he can’t sell it. All the problem was is that the bass side of the bridge was WAAAYYY to low.

I pulled out a ten cent coin, four turns of the bridge bolt, BINGO, perfect playability. br / Yeah, the tone control will likely need replacing, but big whoop. It sounds beautiful, even with the dead strings on it.

I even got him to throw in a case for $0. Bargain and a half. br / br / How much I hear you all ask?

br / br / $499 Australian Dollars. Go do the math! I can’t wait to finish paying this off in the next few weeks and going wild.

It just seems to be that every guitar I want is falling right in front of me. I few months ago, I was really wanting an S-S-S Strat. Then I get a phone call from someone I had not seen in two years offering me her partner’s guitar that he does not play.

It was an S-S-S Strat. $100 later and it was mine. Now I get the PRS I’ve been wanting for years.

br / br / So here are my rules for pawn shop guitaring. br / br / span style="font-weight: bold;" 1. Never impulse buy /span br / You see something you like, don’t just grab it and run (unless you think you can get away without getting caught).

Play the guitar for a while. Put it down and come back in the next few days. See if it still feels the same and has the same appeal as that initial reaction.

The last thing that you want to do is to buy a guitar that you loved at the time only to take back to the same pawn shop a few weeks later. br / br / span style="font-weight: bold;" 2. Have a goal /span br / This follows on from tip number one.

Have a goal as to what type of guitar you are after. By that I mean you should a clear definition of what you want to buy. This will help you avoid the impulse buy, and focus your attention so you don’t get distracted by all the shiny things in the shop.

Going back to my PRS example, I’ve been looking for a nice guitar with soap bar style pickups now to round out my collection. I wasn’t necessarily after a PRS, but that came as a giant bonus. It was the only guitar that had the features I was after, and as such was the only guitar I picked up and tried.

Don’t by a guitar that you don’t need, unless of course it is something exceptional. br / br / span style="font-weight: bold;" 3. Play with the knobs and know how a guitar works /span br / The ones on the guitar you dirty fiends.

Turn all the knobs, waggle the lead, and flick all the switches. Make sure they all work, and if not, have a rough idea if you can fix it yourself or how much it may cost you. You don’t want to spend $100 on a guitar and then have to do $300 worth of work on it.

The PRS has a busted tone pot, and I can most likely fix that myself, and at worse, I no someone who will fix it for a few beers. You also need to know a little about the setup of guitars. The PRS again is a great example.

The strings were to low, and after looking down the neck I could tell the issue was just the bridge height. Simple things like that can get you a bargain. This guitar had been ignored my who knows how many people before me because they did not know how to correct that simple problem.

A little knowledge is your friend here. br / br / span style="font-weight: bold;" 4. Try some different amps /span br / This is very important.

The person running the pawn shop will always plug you into a small Fender combo and crank the reverb. I honestly think that those small combos were designed by Fender exclusively for the pawn shop industry because they make every guitar sound great. So try the guitar with that crappy 15W no name amp as well.

It will give you a much better idea on the true sound quality. br / br / span style="font-weight: bold;" 5. Don’t pay for the case /span br / From my experience, the person who pawns off any decent guitar will have had it in a case, and the case will likely be out the back of the shop.

Ask about the case, ask if it is included in the price, and if not ask why not. 75% you’ll get the case for free, 20% heavily discounted, and the remaining 5% involves you walking out of the store. They want the sale just a bad as you want to buy the guitar so let them chase you.

br / Well, I’ve got a few weeks until I get my new pawn shop beauty. I’ll make sure to let you know how she settles in. Till next time… br / br / By: Chris Watson br / br / Article Directory: a href="http://www.

Many classes offering courses in guitar playing have sprung up. Hence purchasing the right electric guitar will help you to enjoy your learning experience. Here are some easy to understand tips that will enable you to make a correct decision in purchasing your electric guitar.

br / br / Are all the guitars the same? br / br / No. There are many types of electric guitars available in the market.

The right guitar depends on the sound that you are interested in. While some guitars can easily switch between jazz, blues and rock without any perceptible difference, the others cater to only one type of sound. Choosing the sound that you want will simplify your purchase decision.

Besides, the sound you also need to take into account the location of the neck on the guitar. The two most common types of positions are the "set-neck" and the "bolt-on" necks. The set-neck allows you to keep on playing longer than bolt-on.

The meeting point of the neck and guitar is tighter to allow the sound to move freely between the two. br / br / The only disadvantage of set-neck is that it is difficult to repair or replace once it is damaged. The bolt-on style is available with the cheaper versions of guitars.

The design is simple, locking the neck in a slot of the guitar body. Musical experts consider that this type of neck style does not give good quality sound and cannot be played longer, but this is more due to type of materials used. If you don’t mind spending money for a superior quality sound but not a durable electric guitar, go for a set-neck.

br / br / What are frets? br / br / You can choose the electric guitar based on how wide and long the neck is. 21, 22 and 24 are the number of frets that you can get with the usual guitars.

The guitars from Stratocasters have 21 frets. This gives you a shorter neck but opting for large frets will let you play more easily. Jackson guitars have higher frets.

The number of frets you should choose will depend on the number of notes you want to play. A higher number lets you play more sounds. br / br / By: Phil Morris - br / br / a href="For%20a%20music%20aficionado,%20the%20electric%20guitar%20is%20the%20instrument%20that%20offers%20the%20greatest%20thrill.

A good guitar will enhance the musical experience. If you love all kinds of music then your electric guitar should be able to play all the genres of music well. But if you want to play a specific type of music like jazz or rock, choose an electric guitar that allows you to play only that type.

If you are interested in purchasing an electric guitar, here are some useful tips to make your purchasing easier. It will give you a good idea about the things you should look for while buying the electric guitar. br / br / Before purchasing the electric guitar, consider the following points: br / br / · Decide on your budget: A good electric guitar can cost anywhere from $99 to more than $20,000.

Hence you need to fix your budget before you start visiting the shop or going online to buy the product. Since the price range of the good electric guitar is high, once you fix your budget, it makes your task easier. br / br / · Choose the sound you want: One of the vital aspects of buying an electric guitar is choosing the right sound you want.

Some guitars are better capable of switching from blues to jazz to rock without anyone noticing a change. Others are meant for one type of music, so you cannot change the sound immediately. Before purchasing, listen to the guitar sounds of your choice.

Consult a music expert to determine the type of guitar used in the recording. He will be able to help you determine the type of guitar that will help you achieve the same result as in the recording. Besides, you should be aware of the type of music you want to play to help you in the selection process.

br / br / · Get the feel of the electric guitar: If the guitar doesn’t excite you when you hold it, it is not the right choice for you. Look around in other shops both online as well as in the market before settling on the perfect guitar for you. br / br / By: Phil Morris - br / br / Article Directory: a href="http://www.

Especially if you have never played a musical instrument in your life! Even if you do not have musical instrument, you can always begin with voice. Piano is excellent for the beginner to start learning.

But what about those with just enough experience to go beyond and venture out into more extensive musical territory? What about the one who perhaps did not make it in musical theory class in college yet still has the desire to play music. Well, this information and the available book are good news for you!

. br / br / What about the guitar player, the sax man, the drummer, the flautist, the harmonica, harp player, rhythm and bells! What about the one who desires to play music by ear for an adventure in self-expression?

You have come to the right place! Being a musician who plays by ear while next to a musician who reads and plays classical music adeptly can be intimidating. We`ve come to think of a person who plays by ear as a non-studious musician, when we might in fact be overlooking a creative genius in the making!

Not to discredit those who have spent years in study, even earning Masters and PHDs. The ear is actually a musical instrument. br / br / Sound waves strike the tympanic membrane (eardrum) and cause it to vibrate.

These vibrations are then passed through the tiny bones in the middle ear and on to the hearing nerve in the inner ear which sends them to the brain. So, listening, hearing or playing by ear should not be discounted. Take an individual who has perhaps never played a musical instrument but listens to hours and hours of a wide variety of music.

Now take another individual who has spent many hours, days and nights studying, learning and performing with ease from sheet music. If we were to put these two in a room, we would have one outstanding listener and one outstanding performer. But what if the listener was asked to perform without sheet music?

Would the listener be able to perform at all? Absolutely, simply from the acute hearing already developed in their brain. And what about the reader of music, who sees the notes and plays them to perfection, what would the reader do if asked to improvise a new song?

Could they create one with ease or would it take a lot for them to creativity compose on the spot? It`s simply a question for you to think about. This leads us to further questions.

.. When we learn to talk, do we all begin with the same words?

Of course we don`t. We learn most easily the words that have to do with our chief interests. br / br / Similarly, in playing by ear the student should follow his own inclinations rather than the order of this book.

Does one really need a text to learn to speak a language that he hears several hours every day? Grammar and a dictionary can be of great help. Does one really need a text to play music that he hears on the radio and on CDs several hours each day?

This book will help. The ear player must practice, just as the note player must practice. But practicing does not need to be drudgery.

The most effective practice means having a good time with the instrument each time. Summary Learning to play a musical instrument by ear does not have to be a drag! If you want to play it, play it!

Don`t let an inability to read music keep you from enjoying your dream instrument. Pick it up and play today by ear! br / br / a href="http://articles-collections.

000-08:002007-02-20T23:20:24.453-08:00Musical Instruments Are Gifts That Can Last A LifetimeLooking for the perfect gift for your son, daughter, niece, nephew or any other young friend? Get them a musical instrument!

With a musical instrument guitar, bass, violin, drum kit or accordion you'll be giving them something that could make them remember you fondly forever. You could even help them start an exciting, fulfilling lifelong career. br / br / So what instrument should you buy?

Depending on their age, I'd get an idea of what music they like. Does bluegrass get them dancing? Do you see them playing air guitar to songs on the radio?

Or is classical music prevalent in their household and they may be the next Itzhak Perlman or Yo Yo Ma? br / br / Does little Joey have a ton of energy he needs to release on a drum kit, or is he the quiet, serious type that might actually have the discipline to take piano lessons and practice? How about sweet Angela who's always humming as she plays with her dols.

Can you see her loving the delicacy of a flute or would she want to be the next Britney Spears? br / br / And keep in mind, they may lose interest in the instrument they start with but it could lead to interest in another one that suits them better. My first instrument was a recorder that I never got anywhere with, followed by a drum kit that I banged on from time to time but with no direction.

Years later I bought my first musical instrument guitar from a nun but never got into playing it either. Eventually, I tried playing a musical instrument guitar with only four strings, a bass, of course, which fit me well. I've been playing it for 25 years now and have gone back to the six string musical instrument guitar as well.

br / br / Ian Anderson, of the progressive rock band Jethro Tull was a guitarist who sold his musical instrument guitar for a flute! He felt he would go further playing flute than guitar and his success has proved him right. He just had to find the right musical instrument for him to succeed with.

br / br / A good way to find which instrument the child is most interested in is to take him or her to a music store and just let them walk around and absorb the atmosphere. There'll usually be people trying out the instruments in the store and the sales staff in music stores are usually very helpful and knowledgable. In the larger stores, there'll even be different sections devoted to certain instruments and their accessories.

Your best bet is to have the child try several instruments and if they really like one, that's where to begin their musical training. br / br / Go online and find the instrument if you want to pay much less than in a brick and mortar store. You can even find any equipment you'd need for recording online, including software that can turn your PC or MAC into a recording studio.

You'll find any accessories needed(strings, gig bags, straps, tuners, instruction books, dvds and cds) and it'll be shipped right to your door for your convenience. br / br / Another way to find which instruments pique their interest is if you play one or more and they show interest in the music you play. I have two nieces and a nephew who have dabbled with the bass guitar because of my playing.

They may never have shown an interest if I didn't play music. br / br / So as you can see, a musical instrument is an exciting, unusual and educational gift for any kid of any age. And it could be the start of a very rewarding hobby or profession they will enjoy for the rest of their life.

..usually "I still can not finish this track!

" br / br / I then take a good close look at this persons room and computer and usually the key to their predicament usually shows its face within a few minutes. br / br / So I have collected the best 5 ways to get your tracks finished, made on time..

.and even started..

.without any musical influences: br / br / b None music way #1 /b br / Before you even start to make any music, make sure that the Internet is turned off. If it is a computer that everyone uses, make yourself a new user account b without internet connection /b - this was my problem, so I turned off the Internet and saved myself 4 hours per day (surfing adds up)!

If everyone is using that one computer, make sure that you have a secure section on it (passworded- so you can back up your section) as you can bet alot of money on something getting deleted. Even have a rota as who can have the computer at what times. You don't want to be interupted in mid-fantastic-never-been-heard-before-number-one-hook making.

br / br / b None music way #2 /b br / Do a mini spring clean and make things user friendly. I have a Temp Store, Downloaded Folder, VST folder (subfoldered into beats, FX etc). This makes my computer work well, quickly and makes my time in music making more efficient.

If your computer is not efficient, or you have to have time to find a piece of software that holds the secret to your humming tune, then you will forget that hum before you find the folder. Having things at hand is a practical way of music making. I know of top artists that go around with a tape recorder or writing pad all the time just in case they get "inspiration".

The 2006 UK Football World Cup Song came to the artist in the bath. br / br / b None music way #3 /b br / How about invest in another monitor? This may seem odd, as we all have been brought up with the idea of one monitor leads to one computer.

However, leading computer music artists are leading the way in utilising 2 monitors at once. In one monitor you have your sequencer running, in the other monitor you could have your software instruments, or mixing deck or any combination that you want. Making music this way is much easier than having to minimise, maximise all the time- you need the computer music making phase to be as realistic as possible, rather than stop starting every few minutes to maximise a window.

br / br / b None music way #4 /b br / Make sure that you are using what you should be using and that you know how to use it. A hotkey function sometimes is much quicker than if you use the mouse, but if you do not know how to use them properly your work can be deleted within a key stroke. Knowing your software, and how to use it properly will save you a heap of precious time, and will also show you functions that you never thought that you had.

I have read somewhere that there are secret functions within the Ableton software that you will only find by experimenting. Take time out once every 6-12 months and read up on your software. Keep it refreshed within your head, don't assume that you know it.

Make yourself a practice screen and just mess around, nothing is going to get wiped out. By experimenting you will find some great sounds and work much quicker. br / br / b None music way #5 /b br / If you have something that sounds very good.

..save it.

I shall repeat...

save it! Unfortunately there are many bits of software out there that do not have a "undo" button, so getting back that classic sound is impossible. Repeating the process will give you a sound that sounded 90% close to your long lost original.

I tend to store good sounds into a folder called "experimentation", and thats where it stays. If I play the same sound after a day or two later and it doesn't sound the same, b then /b I tweak the sound. In the past I used to write down all the values on how I built up particular sounds.

I would even have a "sound day" where I would just make sounds of various types, and this kept me away from tinkering at music making time. Before you make any type of music, stand back and just think, have you actually done all your none music making tasks? !

Does it really matter if you play a classical musical instrument or a contemporary musical instrument? It can. First and foremost, playing a musical instrument should be fun and rewarding.

If it’s not, you are not likely to practice it at all and eventually you will lose interest. br / br / Playing classical music with a classical instrument can be remarkably challenging and rewarding. As a general standard, classical music is more intricate that contemporary music, although there are naturally exceptions to every rule.

br / br / Playing contemporary music with contemporary instruments can also be tremendously satisfying and rewarding. While not everyone may agree that contemporary music is a gift when they hear it, those who appreciate it will appreciate it deeply. br / br / One of my favorite trends as of late is to either play contemporary music with a classical instrument or classical music with a contemporary instrument.

Both sounds are considerably remarkable and both aspects take quite a bit of talent and practice. Creating this interesting twist can ultimately please more crowds, as classical music played with a contemporary instrument can reach the younger generations and actually turn them on to classical styles. The same can be said about contemporary music that is played with classical instruments.

br / br / When choosing between classical or contemporary instruments, the best method of decision making is simple preference. When choosing for a child, or helping a child make the decision, preference of course still matters, but opening the doors to new music and different experiences can really benefit the child tremendously. The basic goal for choosing an instrument, either classical or contemporary, is finding an expression that works well with the personality.

Children who learn at least a little of both classical and contemporary expression are more equipped to make the decision for themselves later on. br / br / Classical music and instrumentation can teach strong basic skills, while venturing into contemporary music and instrumentation can be both inspiring and fun for kids, especially older children. br / br / Being well versed in classical music can actually provide a better platform for kids or adults who want to play a more contemporary instrument.

Contemporary music is often written with the use of only a few chords and a basic beat while classical music demands a higher level of instrumentation. If we never teach kids the classical instruments or the classical music, the classical arts are destined to die. !

000-08:002007-02-20T23:14:48.149-08:00Free iPod Music Download p class="articletext" There are many websites popping up all over the internet today that promise you can download legal free music for your iPod. But are they being honest with you?

Although there are plenty of sites offering free iPod music downloads, most of these sites are illegal and could be violating copyright laws if you download music files from these sites. br / br / There have been plenty of reports in the newspapers and on the TV recently where people who have had lawsuits filed against them by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) for downloading copyrighted songs to their iPod or PC. These people have ended up being forced to pay thousands of dollars in fines just because they decided to download a few songs for free.

br / br / However there is a way in which you can download legal music for your iPod that is almost free. br / br / What you will need to do is find a membership that lets you download as many songs as your iPod can hold for a small one time fee and is legal. This is much better than paying 99 cents every time you download an mp3 file.

In the long run, it is more cost effective. br / br / Normally these sites will charge you a one time fee which provides you with a life time membership to their site and includes unlimited downloads. Usually the cost is affordable and cost less than $50.

000-08:002007-02-20T23:12:09.182-08:00A New Music of the Orient: A Touch of the West and a Dash of the Divine p class="articletext" A new musical fusion has arisen in New York and it's not the kind you can catch for ten dollars at a club in the West Village. For the many thousands of Chinese immigrants trying to stay afloat in a new world and for those westerners who have always wanted to understand the Chinese but have shied away for lack of a way in--for anyone who has wondered where the two civilizations connect, the answer may lie not in words, but in music.

br / br / Lisa Li is a master of the pipa (Chinese lute) and a graduate of the Chinese Conservatory of China. She has composed and performed across Europe, Asia and the United States, and her playing was featured in the Academy Award-winning movie The Last Emperor. Now, as one of the lead composers for New Tang Dynasty Television's Chinese New Year Spectacular, a grand scale performance of traditional Chinese dance and song, Lisa has created what she believes to be a new kind of sound--based on ancient Chinese folk and religious music, but going beyond either of them.

br / br / “Music is alive, because in the view of the Chinese ancients, every single object in the world has life. In fact, in Chinese, when we refer to a musical note we call it a ‘live note,’” she explains. But according to Lisa, it must be composed and played from the heart—sometimes in ways that sound foreign to the western ear.

br / br / But the melodies are far from random. Lisa’s music, like all traditionally composed Chinese music, is based on a series of pentatonic (5-note) scales. This system has its roots in Taoism, which teaches that all matter is formed from the five basic elements of metal, earth, wood, fire, and water.

It teaches that in order for a being to be healthy, it must have all of these elements in balance. So, from the Chinese perspective, a song or piece of music must also contain a uniquely crafted balance of these elements. There are also eight note scales that relate to the Taoist symbol called the bagua, which is most commonly known in the West as part of the practice of fengshui, or geomancy.

br / br / An example of this is the piece she wrote for the dance “A Dunhuang Dream.” The dance is set against a backdrop of thousands of caves carved into the sides of cliffs as they are in the Moago Grottoes in the Dunhuang region of China. Seated at the mouth of each cave is a Buddhist or Taoist deity.

As the dancers emerge, one can hear from the orchestra pit the voices of the erhu (Chinese violin) and guzhen (zither), but these are soon joined by the more recognizable resonance of cello, bass, oboe, and brass. The result strikes the ear as achingly otherworldly and yet also solidly familiar. br / br / In fact, the specific ya yue used in the score is the same as that found in the ancient pipa music written on scrolls that were discovered by archeologists in the actual Dunhuang caves years ago.

br / br / “I feel very deeply that music is a heavenly language, a divine language,” Lisa says. “It is able to uplift people’s hearts and minds. It is good for the soul.
