Christina Aguilera Wows At The Grammys

After stumbling vocally at Clive Davis pre-Grammy bash Saturday night, I was bracing myself from the moment I saw Christina Aguilera make her diva-like entrance to the stage during the Grammy telecast. I knew she was singing the James Brown classic It s Man s Man s Man s World from a Gold Derby tip-off, but was afraid it was going to be a strained mess.
Christina Aguilera took the stage, and it was over.

Forget about Beyonce, Jessica Simpson, Britney Spears mdash; this girl mopped the floor with all of their wigs, took names, and didn t stop to apologize. Not since Mary J. Blige s jaw-dropping performance of No More Drama back in 2002 have I been so moved by a live television performance.

Everyone around me was speechless.

Entertainment Weekly raved Everyone knows Aguilera s got pipes mdash; but probably not even her most devoted fans could ve imagined her channeling James Brown with the magnetic fervor she displayed tonight. They go on to say Crouched on the floor, clutching the mic stand, and belting full-throttle from beginning to end, Xtina didn t so much sing It s a Man s Man s Man s World as she did unleash it on her mesmerized audience.

This is the 2007 Grammy performance to remember; the Godfather of Soul would be proud.
People magazine held a in which people voted on the performance, and 90% of those that voted claimed there ain t no other woman like Xtina . The official Grammy press release boasted The mighty Aguilera delivered a memorable, perhaps legendary, performance of James Brown s It s A Man s World .

The Post-Gazette said In a tribute to James Brown, Aguilera, in dazzling white suit, offered a scorching (and screaming) version of It s a Man s Man s World.
I enjoyed most of the performances Sunday night, especially that of the laughing all the way to the Grammy press room Dixie Chicks, but the Philadelphia Inquirer was less than impressed than I mdash; with the exception of one woman. Unfortunately, few of the performers made the most of their time, with many of the production numbers rehashing hits of decades ago, as if the music industry s best prescription for a troubled future was to listlessly revive the past.

Exceptions included a knockout performance by Christina Aguilera on James Brown s It s a Man s Man s Man s World .
After she tore up the stage with the scorching number where she did justice to the late great soul singer mdash; emulating him like a pro mdash; the entire stadium leapt to its feet. Jamie Foxx and Dixie Chick Martie Maguire were among those who looked floored by the electrifying performance.

You could read Jamie s lips as he smirked and said That s the shit right there , and Martie turned to the person next to her and said Wow.
Within hours of the telecast, Aguilera s now Grammy winning album Back to Basics (she won her fourth for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance for Ain t No Other Man ) shot from near #400 all the way to #23 on Amazon.com, and I would say expect that same kind of jump on the Billboard chart come next week.

Often criticized for her emotionless oversinging as she is for her sexy image, Aguilera surprised even me, a long time fan. She pulled this performance from the depths of her soul and spilled it all over that stage like it was her dying day. I was so speechless and floored by the performance it took me a few seconds to realize I had tears in my eyes.

James Brown is smiling in his grave.
Christina really made one her best performance to date..

proving COVE's countdown of naming her as the #1 best vocalist.

Her performance stole the show! She is soooo much more than just a pop singer.

I am one HUGE Christina Aguilera fan, and I always knew she had an amazing voice, but my jaw literally dropped when I saw her last night. That was the absolute best performance I've seen of her to date. I love love love her!

!!

I have been an fan of Christina for years now and that performance assured me why I respect her as an artist.

She is surely the best female vocalist her generation.
that was seriously a legensary performance..

...

noone can touch her now...

.
I have always thought she had a nice voice. Better than any in her age group.

Christina has set the stage for the next level of her career. We've known for years that she is more than a pop singer. Put this performance above the level of Michael Jackson on his first solo performance.

I'm so glad that I was able to see it.
your article is great. I'm not a fan of her and I admit she was oh so great.

This girl is light years away ahead of other singers. Great review!
meh, wasnt feeling it.

She tries too hard.
"meh, wasnt feeling it. She tries too hard.

"
I dare to imagine what you'd think of James Brown perforances if you think SHE tried too hard.
Christina gave a one-of-a-kind perfomance at the 2007 Grammy's, and the high note she hit (Besides the one by the end) was just shockingly mesmerizing!
A message to the world: The Genie has come a long way, y'all!

Still one of the best voices around, her performance had me in AWE. I couldn't help but to clap,..

and I was at home!
BRITTNEY WHO ??

?
I was not surprised to hear and see that performance. Her back-to-back songs, "Mercy On Me" and "Save Me From Myself" (Back To Basics album)show her unimaginable vocal command.

As my voice teacher said, "What an instrument!" But, beyond the "instrument", she's an artist. That performace put her in a class by herself.

It was stunning beyond words.
I LOVE Christina but am I the only one who heard the wrong high note. Don't get me wrong, she's the main reason I watched the show but I know what I heard, please someone else tell me they know what I'm talking about.

Christina is a 'real' singer. You cannot compare her to these 'want-to-be' singers! Hands down, she has it all tied-up.

You definitely have to give credit where its due. Give it to her! So stop all of your negative comments!

Christina is a 'REAL' singer! Everyone in the audience knew this, and everyone sitting at home could never, ever say Christina A. did not mesmerize them.

On top of everything, she's beautiful and so refreshingly HUMBLE! Is that a package or what!

Out`A control but totally under control-mission impossible.

She and the old rollin stones would be once in a life time.

Well, honestly, i don't like her! BUT DAMN!

The girls sings perfectly!
She really is perfect with a mic!
LAdies and Gentleman!

That was a historic performance. She has added to her fan base tenfold with that! I've been a James Brown fan since about 1966.

And this was the real deal. It will change the way she performs from now own!
Christina will go down as the best singer of our time.

.not Madonna, Brittany and let me laugh Jessica Simpson..

...

.when she made Lady Marmalade ..

..Pink specically said she has never heard a voice like that.

..(not an exact quote_.

...

OH MY GOD!! I literally had chills up my spine.

Christina's voice is so amazing. I am a Christina Aguilera fan but she really surprised me with this one. I was floored!

I had to download her performance immediately and I can't stop watching it.
There is no way that was Christina Aguilera. That was quite unexpected.

Hands down best performance of the night. I don't know about having tears in my eyes (lol), but you have to give Cristina A. respect.

She defiantly is the Voice of her generation. This is coming from somebody that can't stand her.
ASTOUNDING.

She STOLE, STOLE, STOLE the show. Period.
i just can't say enough good things about this girl.

for those people who still don't give her the recognition she deserves, i hope that performance changed your mind. her albums are amazing and she is absolutely beautiful. christina you ROCK.

Christina Aguilera really delivered an exquisite performance that left everyone crying and at the same time in awe!

Her voice was spot on as she delivered the goods with her soulful number. She is truly the best singer of our time! My jaw dropped in amazement as she belted everything with so much emotion and soul!

She is amazing, amazing, amazing and amazing! Beyond amazing! DIVA ETHEREAL!

11 out of 10! Out of this world!!

!!!

!!!

! Totally surreal! I mean, I've been dreaming of a legendary Christina performance all my life and she just did it!

WOW! I am so speechless, so in awe, everyone watching in our area all stood up and clapped in awe! She was amazing!

She had all of the viewers in the grasp of her hands as her voice soared higher than the stratosphere! DIVANESS in all it's glory! The show stopper indeed!

A legendary performance! WOWOWOWOWOWWOWOWOW!
THE GRANDMOTHER OF SOUL!

HEHEHEHEEH
I have been watching Christina coming up over the horizon lately, catching an amazing duet with Tony Bennett, and appreciating her Candy Man and Ain't no Other Man, but nothing prepared me for the chills and the tears and the spontaneously jumping off the couch and clapping that sprang from way down deep when I watched and heard her sing It's a Man's World!!!

I have been waiting a long time to be moved that way by music! This just changes everything. I am humbled.

..
wow!

! what can u say but wow!!

best vocal performance i may have ever seen. i catch myself watching it over and over again..

.unbelievable!!

I've seen my share of music award shows. I really enjoy them as a matter of fact. They are always good for one of two things: An expletive filled acceptance speech by rappers or rockers and the all too rare exceptional live performance.

Regarding the latter, that which immediately comes to mind is the American Music Awards when Prince sang Purple Rain. At the time I was not a huge Prince fan, the time immediately following his performance however found me envious of those who were. I've enjoyed his performances ever since.

I've seen my share of music award shows; I enjoy them. The 49th Annual Grammy Award show was just different. I enjoyed the heck out of it.

There seemed to be an air about the performers and the live audience. It was like they were all there to be entertaining and be entertained. I know that sounds odd, but I've gotten the impression over the last few years that some award shows regardless of their genre, exist more as a platform for political statements, outlandish dress and affected performances.

From Beyonce to Rascal Flats, each performance during the 49th kept me entertained. I was very pleased that Mary J and The Dixie Chicks won so many awards. Their performances were great too.

. . Speaking of performances, the topic of this round-about rant, let's talk about some of the highlights, or at least those that are burned in my memory.

Carrie Underwood could sing the classified and make them sound good and country - she's got some church in her. Mary J owned the stage. She had the perfect combination of genuine emotion and stage presence that makes her so good.

Corinne Bailey Rae, John Legend and John Mayer, well this turned out to be one of my favorite performances of the evening. Corinne's voice is sweet and was accentd well by Mayer's deft guitar interjections. Legend's smokey vocals, phraseology and intonation are second to none.

Mayer, well, he needed another 4 minutes to take his guitar solo to where it wanted to go - he is fast becoming quite well known for his play - Claptonesque.
Undoubtedly the performance of the evening was offered by Christina Aguilera.
After ascending to the stage, she stole what Mary J had owned earlier.

She took four confident steps grabbed the mic like a weapon, and began slaying, "It's Man's . . .

World". I'm not a big Aguilera fan but I watch the music award shows and when she performs on them, I have always been surprised at how great she is. She is a truly gifted performer with a very solid voice that she uses in any number of ways crossing from rock, to rap to ballads.

There was just something about this performance that elavated it to legendary. The juxapsitions of man and woman, black and white, new and old and life and death tacitly suggested to me something I am ill equipped to articulate at this moment. This was not only the WOW performance of the evening, it has become one of my favorite live TV performances of all time.
