Jessica Simpson and John Mayer get close at Grammy after-party

and didn't walk the red carpet together for the Grammys and didn't sit together at the broadcast, but they did get close at the Sony/BMG Grammy after-party. Mayer has been very reluctant to answer any questions about his relationship with Simpson, even going as far as to start speaking Japanese when asked him about Jessica during the red carpet to the Grammys. The singer, who won two awards last night for his CD Continuum, doesn't like to talk about his person life at all, but that doesn't stop E!

The cable network's Marc Malkin reported that and were spotted kissing on the cheek as John was stroking her back and singing "Wishing Well" to her, the '80s hit by Terence Trent D'Arby. He reports that when Jessica came in to the party, John kissed her and then they parted ways so Jess could chat with , only to be reunited for the back stroking. While Joe Simpson and even joined the couple in conversation, John began singing the D'Arby song.

TMZ said there was no word on if the couple left the party together, but there has been numerous stories about Jessica joining John on his latest tour.

As E reports, dozens of people were watching the couple be cute together last night and celebrity photographer Kevin Mazur even snapped a few shots of the two together, something that hasn't really happened before. This could be a sort of coming out for and .

Earlier in the evening, when asked about , he became immediately defensive, denying Seacrest's claim that he "had to ask", saying that Ryan really "wanted to ask" and then saying, in Japanese, "She is very beautiful and you are the last to know." He said the phrase in Japanese and then told Seacrest to "Take it to another room, find a Japanese person, decode it, and you'll have an answer."
In other "are they or aren't they" news, Scarlett Johannson had to answer to rumors that she's dating her video co-star Justin Timberlake at last night's Grammys, telling E!
