To my wonderful readers I offer a Car.
I am selling my '98 Oldsmobile Bravada. Here is the skinny on the car:Used, about 80,000 miles, Leather interior, Radio busted and needs a new or fixed Radiator and Battery connectors.
The outside is dent and rust free with some Dirty Coast stickers proudly on the back.
Basically fits within Fair grade via the Blue Book analysis and at this level with these miles it should sell for 4,100.
So any takers?
Know someone who needs a new (used) ride?
January 3, 2007 in | A few years ago I would never make resolutions. I was full of piss and vinegar back then.
But I also was never going to get married or have kids. So goes the cycle of life. Now in my 30's I like to make a list of things to shoot for.
Give myself options for improvement. Here is this years list:
1) Lose 30 pounds so when I marry on October 27th, 2007 I weigh in at around 250 pounds. This is number 1 because it will lead to all others being easier challenges.
Healthier, lighter, happier makes for earlier mornings and more productive days.
2) Grow Dirty Coast to double its daily average in sales and expand the audience. I like my new company and would love to have everyone who loves New Orleans know about it.
3) Launch Humid Beings. This project has been on my schedule and in my notebooks for exactly 3 years now. It has changed overtime as the web has evolved and my knowledge of what works and will work in New Orleans.
But the good news is the designs are almost done and the team I needed all along to make it successful is in place finally.
4) Launch Willdoo 1.0.
My business partner Ben Hirsch has become a real Ninja creative programmer and with some collective scheming with him and Jonah and I we can roll out a pretty helpful CMS tool for Designers and the Average Joe.
5) Get Married. Which I guess is breaking a resolution from a while back.
6) Get a new dog. No dog will ever replace the Nina but we need some fresh blood in the pack.
7) Buy a new car.
I am getting a Jeep, no matter how much they might suck I have always wanted one.
8) Start playing Drums. I have native rhythm from somewhere and need to exploit it.
And jam with Zack upstairs while driving Susan insane.
9) Turn my yard into the Zen Garden it wishes to become. I need to unplug more this year and read.
The yard might be the way to make that happen.
10) Write. I used to keep a daily journal.
3 pages a day was the routine and I kept at it for years. I need to start that up again. I can get really bogged down under the weight of my thoughts, plans and schemes and need a way to stay on top of all of it.
A bird's eye view if you will and a journal is the way to make that happen.
Those are mine. What are your's?

I guess I won't be doing any work in New Iberia anytime soon.
Here is a walk through of an email conversation I just had which has resulted in me not getting any web development work in New Iberia. Enjoy:
like for you to bid on producing his web site. We will provide graphics, photos and text to you. The following is a rough outline of the site.
If you need to give me a price range, that is fine. We also need the site to be able to be updated by the campaign probably daily. Our time frame is to have this up by mid January.
Let me know if you have any questions.
My Response:
I'm interested. Can you tell me who the candidate is?
His or her politics?
Sorry to be nosey.
meaning what?
My Response:
Meaning we only work for Progressive candidates because of our other clients within the Democratic party.
If the candidate has these leanings we are more than happy to bid for the work.
A client is a client.
If you only do work for those who have the same political views as yourself, good luck. Sorry, we apparently won't be able to do business.
Any guesses who this candidate is and what his or her politcs are?
Anyone agree that a client is a client?
Maybe I should do a child pornography site where rapists wear fur coats made from baby seals while using profanity. I mean, a client is a client, right?
Gotta pay the bills!

You can't sell a salesman.
Went to the Jeep dealership this morning to test drive the 4 door Wrangler Unlimited. Not a bad ride, room in the back. Rugged it seems. Sirrus built in.
Soft or hard top.
Then the junior salesman I was working with went and got the big guns who asked questions and scribbled on paper and then ended with a big circle and said, So Mr. Haney how can we get you in here today to make a purchase of this vehicle?
Sucka.
I had a meeting to go to.
Thinking about it.
We shall see.
Anyone have any Jeep horor stories from the last few year's models?

November 19, 2006 in | November 15, 2006 in | She was the buddha of the household, the glue of the gang. I don't know who misses her more, Susan and I or the dogs.
She was my best friend. And if you ask anyone who ever met her they would tell you also one of the coolest dogs they had ever met. The matriarch of our household.
She had very soft ears and liked to bark at everyone who dared walk past the house.
Today a board on our fence fell loose and both Eli and Nina got in the yard next door and then outside. Nina was struck and injured as someone turned down Thalia.
Good chances she was going into the lot across the street to catch that damn black cat, her nemesis.
She was carried by 2 kind neighbors to the house where I had a chance to talk to her and be there when she died.
She is buried in our backyard garden.
A fitting memorial will be erected soon.
She will be missed terribly by Susan, Myself, Elvis and Eli.
If you knew Nina please post a comment.

If I lived anywhere else, I would live in Brooklyn.
During my first extended trip to NYC as a Senior in College I became enamored with the place. It sat well with my manic energy and curiosity. But it was further visits to friends when I came to know and fall in love with Brooklyn. Many extended visits and crashing in Park Slope gave me a chance to walk the neighborhoods. The shops, cafes, people, old buildings not encroaching on the sky and green space made me feel like I was a southern relative.
But the main link between New Orleans and Brooklyn, and why I connect with it, is the people and their pride in their area's idiosyncratic and eccentric fabric.

I don't want to be a complaining fascist with maxed out credit cards.
Before I read the articles within the NYTimes Sunday edition magazine on the issue of American Debt I wanted to write what I think before being influenced and angled by the pieces. While I do this I should rant on a few other conversations I have had over this weekend.
Our Debt or Why America is going down the tubes.
I don't find it humorous anymore when I hear someone voice the opinion that America is THE SUPERPOWER. It is as much an illusion as the guy in the nice suit driving the sports car.
He owns neither but he sure plays the part well.
What is to come? We will raise our debt ceiling to 10 trillion and more.
We will be owned in larger and larger segments by China and other outside parties. Our economy's influence will dwindle with each year as we graduate 70k Engineers versus China and India's 900k. Friedman says it is a flatland where the ground to play on in business is global and outside the boundaries of nations.
I agree with some points yet American dominance in influencing this game, while well established, is not set in stone. We are mortgaging our mortgaging our mortgage to pay for the Porche and cowboy hat.
So it is for America, it is for Americans.
We are broke. We save little to nothing and in some strange twist seem to actually live in the moment. I find it strange because we are the anti-Buddhist country.
We drive our economy on desire. On Needing. On wanting.
On fear of death. On outside concerns rather than within. And yet it is NOW that matters for us.
There is no concern for what is next. Right now is the important moment. This moment when I want that.
It is the only Buddhist-like principle we follow. The big difference being we live in the NOW selfishly and with no understanding of the big picture.
Debt free when I am 35.
I would like to keep gaining as I have been over the past 2 years in terms of success professionally. With each new opportunity and client comes new skills to organize, oversee and plan projects that are greater in scope, difficulty and budget. If I keep at this, and I don't see any reason why I can't, hope to be debt free by the time I am 35.
That gives me 4 years to pay off school, loans and my house. A great deal of money compared to the American average. If I can become debt free or at least close I will be living with no weight other than the burden of growing as a person and more creative challenges.
Anyone have any investment advice?
It's all about choice and freedom.
A friend has been offered a chance to sell a venture he has begun and continues to build.
The benefit would be breaking free right now and pursuing other projects yet less gain down the line if things go as planned. Money now at a set amount. Take out taxes and capital gains and what are you left with?
So the issue came up, what is enough? And can you ever really have enough?
Our conclusion was that enough meant you could live off interest.
Your money makes money. A dollar is no longer a dollar, it is an employee for you. You have enough when your money works for you and you don't worry about if you can or cannot do something, buy something (with limits) or take time off.
That is freedom and it means you don't have debt (within limits), you don't have obligations that force you to be a part of the machine, the grinding day to day, the system. It means working for yourself and making a good living at it. That is then enough.
You need to not be afraid of death.
Once you realize that all you have is this breath, this moment and that you have no control over the next day, week, year, you can truly be free to enjoy your life and live with confidence. It is called the Death Seizure by some.
It is why we try to stay young, try to have things and pray, pray, pray and pray some more. We are afraid of losing it all. For some it is the fear of what is next, for most it always goes back to the fear of what is last.
This is how I think about it. Realize that in the big picture you are a very small part of a very big picture. You are living one life in time and repeating the mistakes of many and achieving the personal accomplishments of those of the past.
What is different is language, wardrobes and how we cook and get around. You are going to die and all your stuff will go to other folks who have their own stuff. Your eternal soul will live on in some way.
How exactly no one can know. Not even people who have hit their heads and seen the light. The only way you can live on that we know of for a fact is through the stories and memories of others that know you, care for you and want to remember you.
So what do you do?
You give back. You nurture.
You create. You influence. You make sure that today, right now you add to the collective consciousness of your family, friends, home, time and place.
And you try and make your life, which is a great deal like everyone else's, to be unique in some way. So be creative, in some way. You do this and you solve some serious problems.
(1) No fear of death, you are too busy living (2) No wasting time looking at and polishing your stuff because you are too busy living and (3) People like to be around you because you know how to live and help enrich their lives and thus you live on for eternity. Or something to that effect. I know I just simplified things but in reality it is that simple.
You just need to realize it, let go and then become a better person to be around.
Americans or America.
You have to choose which you are.
Right now. It is sooooo important considering where this country is going. You can be someone who believes in Democracy, which is a form of Socialism, and believe in the betterment of Americans (the people) over America (the state) OR you can be a fascist or Neo Liberal Economist and believe in the betterment of America (and corporations) over the people.
Bush and his people say they care about Americans yet all actions say otherwise. All their actions care for the State, the Corporations, and this idea of America (the word freedom has so little value after this assholes have run its use into the ground.) Where all of us pay the price by supporting or allowing this belief in America is with rising debt, illogical foreign affairs, lack luster gains and justifying lies.
So which are you? A believer in Americans and Democracy or a Fascist who defends the State?
You live here, stop bitching.
My friend Jason just came back from India. While there he visited New Delhi and Dubai. Here is what he found.
Dubai is everything you think it is or have read about. It is the will of man to be god. To build islands when the coast line becomes bought out.
To make a Manhattan (they are) if you want to. To care so much about outside appearances that you have no soul and no funk. It is a great place to buy real estate.
Nice place to visit, but you wouldn't want to live there. And now about its opposite.
New Delhi is a very sad, cramped dirty place.
If you feel like your life is hard, you are depressed on how things are not exactly like you envision them to be you need to visit New Delhi. You live in America. You have more choice, opportunity and freedom to do what you want in this life than anywhere else.
Yes there are obstacles, but compared to New Delhi you are a king or queen. So stop bitching.

The best thing I have ever done at Jazz Fest: handed out stickers.
So this weekend I was set-up outside of a friends house near Liuzza's during Fest. While I was selling t-shirts to folks coming and going the real joy stemmed from a rather simple interaction with the folks I met. I would give out Free Stickers.
If you walked down that street I gave you one. And let me tell you, if you want to know how people feel about being back, about supporting the city, you need to hand out these stickers.
Be a New Orleanian.
Wherever you are. is what the stickers say. You have seen them around town I am sure.
They are small and non invasive. They go great on lap tops, bicycles, cars, and most importantly on people. All over Fest folks were sporting that sticker and the other one we have that simple says I am New Orleans.
I was given hugs and thanked all day long for doing what you are doing. I heard stories from folks walking by, where they came from, how many fests they have come to, where they had to move to, how they WILL BE COMING BACK ONE DAY.
Handing out stickers.
Who would have guessed that would be the highlight of my Jazz Fest. But it has been and it will be hard to top it.

March 25, 2006 in |Explanation: Some images of Saturn appear surreal.
Earlier this year, the robot spacecraft Cassini now orbiting Saturn took this surreal image of the gas giant Saturn, its majestic rings, and its enigmatic world Enceladus all in one frame. Enceladus, recently found to emit jets of ice from possible underground seas, appears white as its surface is covered with relatively clean water-ice. Below Enceladus are the rings of Saturn, seen nearly edge on.
Compared to Enceladus, Saturn's rings show their comparatively high density of dirt with their golden-brown color in this natural color image. The planet Saturn, in the background, appears relatively featureless with the exception of thin ring shadows visible on the upper left. The terminator between night and day is seen vertically across the face of distant world.

March 20, 2006 in | When I was in Australia many years ago I helped lead tours for American high school and college kids. My staff and I were never in a city for longer than a few hours max and spent all our time out there. Once of the guys who was helping with my tour had a work out I began to do with him on an almost daily basis.
It was called simply the Card workout. I will begin this when I return to New Orleans after this weekend. The Card Workout and the gym.
Here is how it works.
Step 1: Get a regular deck of playing cards. Keep one joker in the deck.
Step 2: Find a park or yard where you can work out that has in it a pull up bar.
Step 3: Get a large bottle of water.
Step 4: When you are there with your water and cards stretch all your muscles.
Step 5: Now you begin the work out. Shuffle the deck and place the remaining joker on the top. Now move a card from the back of the deck to the front.
This card is your first excercise.
Step 6: Repeat exercises until you have made it through the deck of 52 cards and have returned to the joker. You are now done.
Exercise length: Average time 1:30, Peak time, 52 minutes.
After all this you are pretty worn out. However, if you have more stamina you should go for a slow jog.
Try and make the work out under 1 hour and you will be in great shape. If breathing break cards or stretch cards pop up one after the other you should re-insert them so they are spaced better through the deck.
* To do sun-gods you stick your arms out to your side to make a T.
You then rotate in one direction making medium size circles always concentrating on keeping the arms as straight as possible. You do a count of 1-2-3-1, 1-2-3-2, etc. until you reach 10 and reverse the direction.
You then do circles from the T formation to in front of you with hands together. Then to circles from in front of you and above your head. After this your shoulders burn.
I need to take serious my body.
I am at a wedding. It is the wedding of one of my best friends.
A friend from college.
I have not seen some of the folks here, having a good time and touching base, in some time.
Over drinks I said that I weighed 265 to 270 pounds.
I said it to get the No, way. You're kidding me reaction. It came in droves.
I said it to share that I had let myself go. I saif it because I am aware that I am getting older and need to get my act together. I need to get some good friend scorn.
An intervention if you will.
What I got were jokes, shrugs and more jokes. I got non-judgmental comments and acceptance that I had become a hefty dude.
Look, I have been 6'4 for some time and with Gorilla shoulders. I am not small. Those who know me will tell you I am a big guy.
The lumberjack, The Jolly Green Giant. However, recently I have let it go. I have stopped working out.
I have stopped running. I have stopped cycling. I have just stopped.
I work. I am active in that sense. But I have given up on The Body.
I have thrown in the towel, if you will, on paying attention to how I look, feel and move.
I write this to express it to you, the reader or random visitor, so I am forced to take notice and stop. Stop neglecting who I am and start respecting my body.
If you see me and I am looking chubby, slow, slumped, a little bumbling . . .
tell me. Help me lose that weight. I want to be like I was when I was in Australia years ago.
Trim, running, active and very aware of my whole self.
Jesus, I need to get back on physical track.

NOLA can't die. It will recover.
But what does recover mean?
When I say we will be back or we will recover to people I do it for 2 reasons.
1) Hope.
I need it and so does everyone else I speak to. We need to believe we can bring back what we had. Although we all know it will never, ever be the same as it was.
And I think that is a good/bad thing. We have lost our past, our neighborhoods, our people. But we have also seen stopped in its tracks the terrible decline we had been experiencing for decades.
Now what? I have hope for a New Orleans that contains more of the great we all lovea nd loved and less of the crooked, evil disenfranchisment we lived with for years.
2) I do believe we can come back.
Some people will come back and having them work their asses off to make their small part of this city something special is essential to city pride, national pride and to serve as a magnet for more support and more returnees. Not everyone will return. Not everyone can return.
It sucks but it is a reality I am going to accept and try and do the best with. Not every building and every street and every block will rise from the ashes. There is not enough money, enough interest and enough insurance.
At least not right now.
I will never leave this city. I am lucky to have bought a house in Lower Garden District.
I don't flood. At least not yet. But maybe my house will one day be taken by the winds or fire or whatever else the future has in store for my little piece of land.
But no matter what happens I will be pulled from this city kicking and screaming. Vocal till the end. I hope everyone else who can get back here does the same.
And for those who can't make it back, I hope the spirit of my Be a New Orleanian, Wherever you are is felt wherever you are.
We all want to walk to the corner store, know our neighbors, dance to good music, eat well and love being New Orleanians like we have for the past few hundred years. We want to walk down the street and feel the history.
Hear the city speak to us. How do we get that back? Keep it alive?
How do we bring our neighbors back and keep back the horribly non-nola golf courses and resorts I am sure certain developers laugh about over lunch?
I ain't quitting.

A few people missed Nothing today.
It has been 17 years since I missed Mardi Gras day and before that I had made everyone.
For the past few years, 5 to be exact, I have dressed on Mardi Gras day as Nothing. I can't begin to explain the costume or why I love to put it on and strut the city. I just do.
But this year while I should have been strutting, drinking bloodys at Igors at 7:30am, walking with zulu and then meeting up with St. Ann I was in bed watching Channel 12 New Orleans History shows and drinking fluids.
It seems that marching in Krewe de Vieux and Muses, dancing to Souls Sister till 5am, going to Moms till 6am and throwing my 5th annual Not-So-Super Super Hero Party (again til 5am), put a damper on my body's white cell count.
Or whatever protects one from being sick.
To all those who looked around for my caped and afroed ass today, I am sorry you saw nothing of Nothing.

Katrina Hours made me go bad.
For some reason I could not sleep anymore. I woke up at 4:45 and decided that this had to be the beginning of my day. Too many things on my mind to fall back asleep.
I was out the door by 5:20 with my dog Nina and heading down Magazine Street. The plan was to hit Please-U on St.
Charles after I dropped Nina off at my office only a few blocks away. I would do what I had done for years when I was up before dusk and get some breakfast and coffee. Start the day strong.
I roll up at 5:45 and Please-U is not open. Frustrated I decide to head back Uptown and go to the French coffee and pastry shop next to the Brother's 3 Bar. They open at 6am.
I get there at 5:56 and wait about 10 minutes for them to open. Inside they are prepping the counter with pastries and making coffee. At 6:10 I realize that they seem to not be rushing to let me in so I can start my day.
I glance a few feet above the painted hours on their glass doors and see a hand drawn sign. New Hours. 7am-7pm Mon-Sat.
So I leave.
I stop at Big Rue on Magazine. 7am.
CC's coffee shop a few blocks down? 7am. Starbucks?
No. Never. Not gonna do it.
I will drive across town to buy local if I have to.
But I need my coffee. I need something to eat.
I need to utilize being up at this god awful early hour.
So I break. I go to Starbucks.
I buy a large iced mocha (I won't order using their lingo) and a croissant.
I am now caffeinated and working.
It is 7am.
And now everyone is open.
Damn them and these new katrina hours. February 9, 2006 in |

In a move to counter the chocolate city Nagin desires along with God, Oliver Thomas wants a Neopolitan city.To achieve this he is trying to recruit more Irish back to the city. We will be Black, White and Red and Beautiful. The Irish helped to build this city.
We need them back.
To enjoy the benefits of New Orleans becoming the world's first Chocolate city, Nestle has decided to pay 2 million to sponsor Mardi Gras 2006. The money from the sponsorship will go to pay for large bars of dark chocolate to help fortify the Canals that breached.
The Dark Chocolate T frame construction will be the first in the world.

I am a Martini Socialist.
What you are politically - left, right, communist, anarchist, lazy, Dem, Republican, Red or Blue - always comes up when you talk about hot button issues like life, liberty and the pursuit to live like I wanna.I have been pegged as a lefty or a radical and been called a liberal like it is a bad name. I have taken the stance of No, I am a Progressive. And then I have to explain what I mean by that (care about improving the status quo for everyone in society).
So I have come up with a new answer to What are you? I am not a communist or socialist. I don't like those sucking the teet of America anymore than the red blooded Republican.
But I am not in any way a supporter of freemarket capitalism that destroys our communities and hurts our work force (wal-mart).
I am a Martini Socialist. Maybe you are too.
Its like socialism accept the state does not decide who gets what and there is not dress code.
I like to make money. I like to create businesses and make moves in a creative free market capitalist economy.
I like my freedom and my privacy. I don't want to be told what to think, what to do or how to live my life. Leave me be, to have a damn good time.
I also understand that I am not the only one around and that the improved lifestyle and well being of my fellow man will in many ways improve my own life. Through cause and effect, the more jobs, the more health care, the more opportunity, the less cronism, the less limitations to access for all Americans the better we all are. Its pretty simple and all it asks is a little sacrifice and selflessness.
So I am a mix of the left and the right I guess. What the left is or the right is or Democrat or Republican has become so muddled that I had to make my own position and party affiliation.
I toast you and all of America.
May we look out for each other and have a better time at living in this great country. Cheers.

What I am schemeing on in 2006 (some will happen, others will simmer, some may get picked up by others):
We shall see. What do you think?
Can I beat Renee' Gill Pratt in District B?
I mean I have heard her speak at Council meetings, and she doesn't ever seem to speak for me or anyone for that matter. I have had a hard time seeing, or hearing ,anything at all of real substance from her in the past few months.
When we needed a leader and positive voice to bring people back and network on how to get things going in District B.
I love where I live. I want to help take part in pushing for more businesses to prop up in our area and people move back to take care of the neighborhoods.
Magazine Street can be and should be the main artery of this city over the next few years. It needs to thrive and help look after the rest of the city as it rebuilds.
Thats is all.

Beyond Thunderdome in the Quarter.
I spent Saturday night in the quarter with some friends. Some observations in the post-k:1) Bourbon street is a different mix of folks these days.
No high school or college kids but alot of men, guessing construction workers.
2) The cops and National Guard kick everyone off the street at 2am. Am I in Dallas?
3) There is a solid gutter-punk circus contingency. More than before. Reminds you of Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome.
You expect Tina Turner to walk out on a balcony at any minute and belt out We Don't Need Another Hero.
Out of the ruins
out from the wreckage
Can't make the same mistakes this time.
We are the children
the last generation
We are the ones they left behind.
And I wonder when we are ever gonna change it
Living under the fear till nothing else remains.
We don't need another hero (we need levee protection).
We dont need to know the way home
All we want is life (within the levees) beyond the thunderdome.
Looking for (politicians) something we can rely on
There's got to be something better out there.
Love and compassion
their day is coming
All else are castles built in the air
And I wonder when we are ever gonna change it
Living under the fear till nothing else remains.
All the children say:
We don't need another hero (we need levee protection)
.
. .
So what do we do with our lives?
We leave only a mark.
Will our story shine like a light or end in the dark?
Is it all or nothing?
We don't need another hero (we need levee protection). . .
All the children say:
We don't need another hero - we don't need another hero
(we need levee protection). . .
I understand that New Orleans is 4th world right now and that basic services will have the occasional hicup. I do. I really am being patient.
But not anymore for UPS. They are a terrible company.
_Ordered a package from online from a clothing store.
_waited the required 5 days to receive the package.
_called to see where the package was.
_got the tracking number.
_had the address changed in the UPS system.
_few days pass.
_They don't have any of the info I had given them the other day, I give them the new addres again.
_call UPS again to track package (call #3) and realize they have the information but it was not given to the driver that day and there is no way to tell the driver where they should go. They promise to fix the problem.
_wait a few days.
_call UPS again (call #4) and explain the above play by play. They aplologize and say they will have the package delivered to the new address on Monday (it was Thursday).
_Call Monday morning (this morning) and check on the package (call #5).
Am told by the operator that the package was mistakenly sent back to the comapny I bought it from. I would have to call them and get a new tracking number.
UPS sucks.
How dare they take a color like Brown and use it as their brand. Brown is more important and noble a tone to be wasted on a worthless operation like UPS. Ship Fed-Ex.
End of story.

What ingredient are you?
3 years ago I placed online a site called .The idea was to both place an idea into the memesphere and communicate with those that had moved to New Orleans and converted to our way of life, our pace, our way of doing things. What led to the creation of the site and the name was many instances, and we have all had them, where I met folks that knew so much about the city, threw some of the best parties and had many friends, but they were not from New Orleans. Chicago, New York, Los Angeles, SanFran, Austin, etc.
They came from everywhere.
I am a Native and when I was meeting all of these hard core New Orleanians I had to ask myself what is it that brought them here? What is it about New Orleans that draws these great people from all over?
And why was I not so enthusiastic as they were? How had I become jadded?
To find out what was going on here I placed online a rather long Survey.
In the 3 years it has been up it has been filled out about 100 times and the results had been pretty interesting. Now in the Post-K I think it might be time to revive it again, draw attention to it and use the data for something useful. The original reason for the survey, other than because I was curious, was to find out who these people were and then market the city to more of these people.
I thought then, and I think it even more now, that the NOLA CONVERTS WERE WHAT COULD SAVE THIS CITY.
NOLA Converts bring needed energy. They bring new ideas.
They are not jadded by how things work here. They give locals a new perspective. They add a new ingredient.
Now more than ever we need NOLA Converts rather than Carpet Baggers. We need this influx of new people. Maybe the Levees will do this.
Maybe the WiFi across the city. Maybe . .
. . Something.
Anything.
Besides NOLA Converts there are other types of people that have a realtion to the city and add to its Roux: NOLA Converts, Natives, Locals, Jazz Festers, Nola Enthusients, the Displaced, the ex-pats, etc.
What do you think?
What ingredient are you? How we gonna cook this pot of Gumbo?

October 19, 2005 in | There is in eastern religious thought a moment inbetween Death and Rebirth called the Bardo Moment. It is a signifigant moment in one's life cycle or the cycle of a city likle New Orleans. Feelings of loss, being lost, hopelessness, confusion are mixed with freedom, elation and being renewed.
The city of New Orleans. The source of who I am as a person. My other parent in a way is in that space right now.
It is amazing to share the experience with others here in town. We are all brought together and on the same level because of this. Survival on the edge of whatever we can make of it.

24 hours back in the Big Easy.
Well this is not really a countdown but more of a list of things I have encountered in the first 24 hours back home. So here goes . . . and feel free to comment and leave your own:
0.
There are alot of grassroots community efforts to fullfil the huge failures of the city and federal governent to take care of its people. Locals helping locals to network, find work, health care and housing.
1.
The Bridge Lounge is offering free wifi, the first drink for free and food soon from morning to night I think. Jane is doing what she can, not to make a buck, but help the business community and stressful masses. At least for all those in the LGD.
2. Cafe Envie across from the Mint on Decatur and Barracks has some damn good coffee and free wifi for all those in the Marginy.
3.
There are those that are camping out on crates and stools to do wifi outside of the CCs on Magazine and Jefferson.
4. The NOPD is not helping out the relief effort it seems.
Them and the Federal presence are abusing power and giving locals a hard time. The NOPD specifically must be suffering from post tramatic stress syndrome. They seem to be looking for any excuse to give people a hard time.
And in the case of one person put him in the hospital. I have 2 friends that were pulled over for no reason and said they felt as though the officer were waiting to be disrespected. Sad.
5. I have not ventured into the lost areas of the city but have heard of the incredible sadness that comes over you when you witness the destruction. I have heard of the "black line" along long stretches of neighborhoods.
6. There are many "ifs" and people are truly living on the edge but thsi has created some real excitement around town. It is a huge opportunity to rebuild, rethink and renew the city.
New Orelasn was in a very slow decline and this storm just excellerated it to the "end game" and now we have to start at the beginning. It is the Bardo Moment for the city of New Orleans. That space between death and rebirth where anything can happen and thus it is a mix of dred and elation.

For all the folks who want to know what I am doing, what I have heard about New Orleans, then go to my personal site blakehaney.com
September 1, 2005 in | So here I am writing a blog post at table number 7 at the Starbucks off the East - West Connection in Hotlanta. A hurricane refrugee.A Hurrugee if you will. You can use that. Try it.
Rolls off the toungue doesn't it?
Ever since I was stuck in traffic on the Causeway (took 3 hours to get across) I have been playing in my head the worst case scenerios and getting a firm grip on that reality. I tried to find the positive of losing my house and everything in it (start a new, build a better house, travel the earth like Kung Fu).
Well the good thing is all that prep work does not matter as of now. My house didn't even lose a shingle. YOU CAN'T HURT THE THALIA YOU BITCH ASS KATRINA!
But I will try and find some positive in all this madness.
*New Orleans has to rebuild.*
Yes, many parts of the city are incredibly fubbared.
And we will need to begin anew. Maybe even get some capital from Bushy to do so. This time we will go from carpet to hard wood floors.
I like Pine or treated Oak.
Now we can finally put the last touches on the levee like we always wanted. Huge walls made of titanium that are covered by an eletromagnetic field that repells water.
When I build my next building in the NOLA it will be concrete and steal and raised with a modern design.
*The beaches of Miami.*
Since we can't come back for a month or so I can go and live and work in Miami with my boy Ben.
Pina Coladas and suntans.
That is all I can think of. In reality it is a terrible situation that New Orleans will never be able to forget.
We will lose alot of good people to death, moving, etc.
My toughts are with everyone.

Condofication, ways to look at it and Keeping the funk.
I was recently asked by my friend Bill my thoughts on the very recent condo fever the city of New Orleans has found itself within. Everywhere you look the abandoned or recently evicted older buildings are following the trend set by the very successful Warehouse Disctrict near downtown. The issue Bill was concerned with was the effect this would have on our neighborhoods. In by that he meant, how will it effect our way of life.
You see, in New Orleans, and more so than most place I believe, the very fabric of our identity is defined by the neighborhoods.
With each neighborhood there exists a different ways to explain your relationship with this place. A "porch culture" exists where Neighbors do actually know each other, converse, second-line, meet at the local store, bar or coffee shop. This is slipping away fast all over the country.
With each strip mall and Wal-Mart completed a neighborhood is cut at the knees.
Take a small neighborhood, even a street segment of a few blocks. Now take 3 buildings there and turn them into high priced condos.
What happens?
Viewpoint 1: A building is restored, or even made better than it ever was, money is invested in the neighborhood and someone is able to purchase a place to live or visit. It is good for the economy, property values of area and assists in clearing out some of the deralic people that might otherwise use an abandoned building for something other than vacationing.
Its all good in the hood, so to speak.
Viewpoint 2: The building becomes a space for transients or "committed tourists" to live when they visit. This takes from the possibility that you have any real relationship with your usually absent neighbor.
Therefor taking from the collective personality of the neighborhood and New Orleans itself. And this is not good for anyone. Even the person who thought they were moving into "a place of such wonderful character.
"
Viewpoint 3: As the city continues to price the local people out it loses its most valuable resource, locals who know the stories, the culture, the creativity, the way of life. This then turns New Orleans in time into a city that mimics a past it can't remember and one that loses a population that makes it what it is and replaces it with one that is disconnected competely.
Viewpoint 4: This is how things happen.
The city will evolve and change. Those from here who stay will roll with the punches and keep the culture aloive. Those who buy condos have done so because they love the culture and don't wish it to be lost and will do what they can to influence it positively.
Viewpoint 5: This is the best scenerio possible. Those who buy all these condos are nola converts and they will move here because they love thios city and wish to add their own flavor.
What is going to happen no one know.
Any evidence from other situations will not tell us what we want to know because none of those other places that have seen such condo fever have the distinct culture we have.
In the end I have an optimistic view. I think the city will change a bit and some of the soul, the funk and the flavor that has stemmed from the Black culture will be lost.
However, new styles, influences will be added to the mix. We may even get a bit smarter politically, environmentally and have less apathy and trash on the streets. Imagine a slightly healthier New Orleans.
A cleaner New Orleans.
But is that still New Orleans? And what is New Orleans?
And that introduces the biggest mystery of them all.

Google Alerts, NBNO, Blake Haney and knowing people care via my email account.
So here is a Narcissistic post for you. If posting about me on my own blog were not enough.
I have my name listed on When someone searches for I will know.
Just today I received an email showing someone found in reference to me. Too bad is defunct at the monent. Kind of kills the excitement.
July 20, 2005 in | During my 30th birthday party on Friday night, I asked a few friends, well actually by the end of the night it might have been all of my friends, what advice they had for me in entering my 30's. Dr. Vince gave the best to me.
It was simply to keep on swinging. At least that is how I remembered it the next afternoon. The advice was to keep on doing what I have been doing all along.
I call it scheming, he called it swinging.
From the crab cakes, the visits to the courtyard and double jack's came the second bit of advice I remember. Focus.
The 20's being the time where you wander, try things, make mistakes, fail and fail and fail with snippets of success that help you know what you are good at, interested in, directions to take. The 30's are where focus matters.
So here I am on a rainy Sunday afternoon, day 2 of my 30's and I know what I need to do.
I need to cut down on doing all that hits me on a whim, all my ideas. I need to only act on those things that tap into something deeper, things that last, which can influence and assist the more mature projects I work on. Less Bullshit.
Fewer distractions. Protect myself from wastes of resources and energy.
During my 20's, or at least the last 6 years of my 20's, I started many projects and a few I completed and a few still exist, on-going entities that continue to mature, evolve.
It is the excitement of the beginnings. The feeling of possibility, to do something, manifest reality, to start a chain reaction, a chain of events, that is the attraction. But then there is the lull of the day-to-day, in order to finish things.
So I need to make sure my current and new gigs are simple enough and small enough in the beginning to not waste too much energy, time or resources and then grow through necessity and desire of those involved, those who benefit.
To achieve it you need to be patient, take moments, calming moments to examine the big picture of that which you are working upon. Only through focus can you make decisions, moves that lead to progression.
There is something to be said of acting from the gut, from intuition. Does focus take from creativity? No, of course not.
Focus grants you the open space without distraction to think through all the angles, relationships, envision what could be. Then act with the trust that you won't have wasted any moves.
If you are a small business owner, an entrepreneur, or an artist you might have a pretty clear idea of what I am talking about.
I have a friend who is an amazing artist. He might be one of the most creative, and impact capable folks I know. When he walks into a room there is electricity.
So he is capable of doing great things. However, he has moments of great success followed by long periods of stagnation. Unable to make a move.
He suffers from too much possibility. There is an infinite amount of angles to play, directions to go in. If you are creative you can see all that is possible.
And that can be a problem. You can act on too much. Or you can act on none.
So I now plan to enlist focus and control over my zeal to make things happen. Through focus I will be able to allow the right ideas happen and the others to happen when it makes the most sense or never at all.
Oh yeah.
And I would like to lose my gut. I should focus on fewer rich dinners and more turkey sandwiches.
July 3, 2005 in | So I am asking you, the reader of my Blog, the google stumbler upon my site, what is your advice for me as I turn 30?
What can I expect? What moves should I make?
Lay it on me.
