FORMER pop princess Britney Spears is an unlikely candidate to beat Catherine Zeta-Jones to a most elegant dressed award - but she has.
Mother-of-two Spears, who has most recently been seen falling out of outfits and forgetting her underwear, has been named the second Most Elegant Woman of the year by Hellomagazine.com.
The 24-year-old beat Oscar-winning actress Zeta-Jones by 50,800 votes in the annual public vote.
The overall winner was Princess Mary of Denmark, with more than 58,000 votes, and Spears came in second with 54,000. Swansea actress Zeta-Jones was in sixth place behind Cate Blanchett, Natalie Imbruglia and Jordan's Queen Rania.
Web magazine editor Verity Smart said, "Princess Mary of Denmark has been a stylish royal for a long time now. Hellomagazine.com readers are familiar with her choice of wardrobe, and how she always manages to look great at every event.
"Britney Spears has a very large fanbase online. She has many extremely active unofficial fan clubs, and their combined power helped beat Catherine Zeta-Jones in this vote."
Zeta-Jones was praised on the website for her ability to make "the most of her curves in jaw-dropping style, often favouring glamorous evening gowns in luxurious fabrics for red carpet affairs.
"
Spears was applauded for her decision not to be "a slave to fashion trends, opting instead to follow her own choices."
Welsh stylist Helen Humphries isn't so sure that Britney should be on the list at all, never mind in second place.
She said, "Who is voting for this?
"I absolutely disagree. I don't think she has got a stylish bone in her body, especially the way she has been looking in the last few years."
While Helen is complimentary about Zeta-Jones's elegant style she believes Spears is too tarty in her outfits.
However, she believes maybe Zeta-Jones, also a mother of two, could take a few tips from Spears when it comes to experimenting.
"She could be a little bit more adventurous and filthy in her dress sense but at least she knows what looks nice and always looks beautiful even if she does look older," Helen said. "Personally I would rather that than she look like Britney.
"
The website also polled the public for the Most Attractive Man and Woman of 2006.
The male plaudits went to Sean Bean who beat pop singer Robbie Williams to the first place by 1% of the vote.
Lord of the Rings actor Viggo Mortensen came in third with 14% of the vote.
In the ladies' categories, Angelina Jolie took the Most Attractive Woman of 2006 title with 25% of the vote. House star Jennifer Morrison came in second, with 21%, while Jennifer Aniston took third place after securing 15%.
Neither Spears or Zeta-Jones made it onto the Most Attractive Woman list.
The women who took the final seven places were Christina Aguilera, Nicole Richie, Queen Rania, Emma Bunton, Nicole Kidman, Cate Blanchett and Salma Hayek.
