Protests and Vigils in SF, San Jose, Fresno, and Around the Country Sunday, October 22nd was the 11th National Day of Protest to Stop Police Brutality, Repression, and the Criminalization of a Generation. There were events in that day, with people wearing black and remembering the names of people who have been killed by law enforcement. A national was released on October 22nd. It includes hundreds of names and stories about people who have died at the hands of law enforcement since the year 2000. Streets and buildings in cities such as Los Angeles, San Diego, Pittsburgh, New York, and Atlanta echoed with the sounds of protest on October 22nd.

In , people marched from Justice Corner to N street and Mariposa for a 5pm rally and vigil. Several events were held during the weekend to demand justice for the homeless in Fresno.

Every day, people are killed by the police in cities and towns all around the US-- people whose eyeglass cases are "mistaken" for guns (such as Asa Sullivan in San Francisco), people who have suspected "bombs" in their backpacks, youth who play their car radios "too loudly," parents who shoplift baby formula, people whose bullet wounds in their backs show the lies that police tell about supposed "threats." These stories might appear on TV and in the print news for a few days and then they are buried, not allowed to stay long in the national consciousness. Since September 11, 2001, law enforcement agents (including border patrols) have been given greater license to increase and broaden repression.

Torture, brutality, detentions, domestic spying, profiling, and other attacks on human and civil liberties have been made part of the routine of daily life that people in America are forced to accept without question. As all of this is going on, attacks on the homeless in Golden Gate Park are increasing. The October 22nd Coalition says, "We resist so that we will not be crushed.

Our resistance gives other people courage." The National Day of Protest "aims to bring forward those most directly under the gun of police brutality AND to also..
