This year's JVC Jazz Festival is entering its final phase with three concerts taking place Oct. 28 and 29. Jazz musician Matthew Shipp and multi-instrumentalist Richard Bona are expected in Warsaw.

However, a concert by remarkable vocalist Cassandra Wilson will be the highlight of the event. Her characteristic low voice and a mix of styles-classic jazz, blues, funk and hip-hop-is Wilson's trademark. The singer, who has been playing the guitar and piano since her youth,
started her jazz career performing with The Black Arts Music Society, a group from her hometown of Jackson in the state of Mississippi.

In the early 1980s, Wilson started working with New Orleans saxophonist Earl Turbinton. In New York she recorded mostly with bass player David Holland, vocalist Abbey Lincoln and Steve Coleman. She recorded her first album, Point of View, in 1986.

More albums soon followed-Days Aweigh and Blue Skies, and the muffled voice of Wilson combined with her dynamic, rich sound suspended somewhere between psychedelic and swing, found their way into the hearts of American audiences.
The recordings and concerts that followed reinforced her reputation. The albums Blue Light Till Dawn and New Moon Daughter were awarded many prizes, including a Grammy, and sold in large numbers.

Traveling Miles, the artist's tribute to the great jazz musician Miles Davis, appeared in 1999.
