THE cost of the average house in Scotland has increased by up to 178 per cent in the last decade, new figures revealed yesterday.
The buoyant property market has pushed up prices in every area of the country today to levels that would be unrecognisable to buyers in 1996, according to the survey by the Halifax.
Properties sold in Midlothian, Edinburgh and East Lothian council areas have seen the biggest jumps, with the average house price rising by 178, 175 and 173 per cent respectively.

Experts say the vibrant market in Scotland shows no signs of cooling this year with an anticipated year-on-year increase of 10 per cent widely expected.
The impact of these enormous increases has been felt most keenly by first-time buyers, with areas of Edinburgh once regarded as affordable seeing even bigger price increases in the last decade.
