CHAMBER CLASSICS III CONCERT: The string quartet Hyperion, 8 p.m.

Jan 27, Arts and Science Center auditorium, 243 Third Ave. E., Hickory.

Hyperion, formed in 1999, is the current resident quartet at San Diego State University and is latest quartet to try out for the Western Piedmont Symphony's quartet in residence program. Hyperion will be the guest quartet for Chamber Classics III, the principal strings for Masterworks III on Feb. 3 and will perform outreach programs throughout the area.

Selections for the evening include: Mozart's Quartet in G Major, K. 387; Mendelssohn's Quartet in F minor, Op. 80; and Shostakovich's Quartet No.

10 in A-flat Major, Op. 118. Tickets are $15 for adult/$10 for students.

A preconcert dinner, catered by Liazzo's, will be held at 6 p.m. at $30/person.

She won the Lilith Fair Talent Search for the Charlotte area in 1999.

"DOWN IN THE VALLEY" FOLK OPERA: "An Evening of Kurt Weill Music," 7:30 p.

E., Hickory. Presented by the Playmakers of Lenoir-Rhyne College, the Lenoir-Rhyne College School of Fine Arts and the Kurt Weill Foundation for Music.

Featuring a 20-piece orchestra conducted by John Gordon Ross of the Western Piedmont Symphony, "Down in the Valley" was initially composed and conceived for the radio. It is an American Folk Opera, using famous American tunes to carry the story and connected by original choral music. Tickets are $15 adults; $10 seniors/students/children.

Weill was born in 1900 and collaborated with Ogden Nash and Ira Gershwin in New York. His music has been performed by Bob Dylan, Bobby Darin, Jimmy Buffet, Louis Armstrong and Frank Sinatra. It was for his "Threepenny Opera" that his most popular piece, "Mack the Knife," was composed.

The actors have each learned every role, and audience members are asked, at the beginning of the performance, to draw names from a bag with the roles in which the actors are to play that night.
