I was poking around the torrent world trying to find good public-domain movies to download and came across at . I was immediately brought back to 1997 when we threw a party of the same name.
Of course, the name was at Raj s suggestion. I vowed to hunt the movie down but I guess the internets weren t what they are today. Anyway, here s the flyer for that party:
The next party was called Metropolis.
raj, xjn, non, and robi played while we watched the movie.
PS. this is my first time posting.
I hope I don t break the tikirobot. posted by on December 12th, 2006
You could say I m a power user of Mac OS X: I know a fair bit about it and I reinstall the OS a fair bit.
Sometimes I reinstall because I messed something up, but more often it s because of HFS+ filesystem corruption or other bugs that are in Mac OS X itself. As if dealing with all these backups and re-installations was not enough, I found out recently that Apple s FairPlay technology is tied to the OS installation, rather than a hardware ID. What this means to you is that Apple locks you out of the music you paid for if you reinstall Mac OS X on your machine.
If this isn t adding insult to injury, I don t know what is. All this from a company that does allow you to use protected music with iMovie and iDVD, but not with Traktor or other 3rd party music applications.
According to the Apple playbook, you are supposed to remember that you have to deauthorize your mac before you send it in for service or reinstall the OS.
Seriously, who is going to remember to do this?
This computer is not authorized to play The Mambo Craze . Would you like to authorize it?
What!?!
!? Oh yeah, I reinstalled, I guess I have to log into my account and deauthorize that installation , even though that installation doesn t even exist anymore and I m still using the same exact laptop.
You can click the question mark button to figure out what the heck is going on. Next you will see a pleasantly worded explanation of how fucked you are:
Well that s all very nice. But this documentation isn t going to help you instead:
If you have trouble deauthorizing the computer, visit the Music Store billing support webpage at www.
apple.com/support/itunes/authorization.html.
It says you can authorize up to five computers but really this is up to five installations of Mac OS X. Once you hit 5, you can deauthorize all your installations and start over again. But only once per year.
Given the rate I ve been forced to reinstall Mac OS X recently, I won t be able to hear my music in about a month.

DJ Chang is one of my favorite djs.
. he played at the infamous Valentine s Day party at the RaNCh so if you can manage to remember that night at all you might remember meeting him His love of music is absolutely contageous!
He played in Warsaw recently with DJ Hagal, and DJ Hagel has a guest set on Chang s Buddha Hash Cafe podcast.
Have a listen!
Fortuntately for us he is returning to the US after a three-year residency in Bahrain. Chang writes about his worldwide DJ adventures on his , and you can find tracklistings of his podcasts on his and pages.

the legendary live performer who rarely performs live, will in fact be performing on the Daily Show tonight. I am assuming this is to promote his new album, which is a 3-CD 56-song extravaganza of old and new stuff.
I hoped this would mean there would be an upcoming tour, but so far it doesn t look like it. His last tour was in August 06 and went unnoticed by me, I assume due to the unfathomable choice of tour locations such as Akron, OH and Asheville, NC.
When asked about the tour locations, he responded (in a press release):
We need to go to Tennessee to pick up some fireworks, and someone owes me money in Kentucky.
Enough said.

The is happening this weekend!
I ve been going to this thing almost every year since the very first show (when it used to be at theatre artaud) and can say that it is always ALWAYS a good time. 25 urban dance companies from around the country come together to show off some of the flyest moves you will ever see. never mind that the guy in the poster is doin the karate kid bird thing, it s lots of fun!
and inspiring too.
I m going to try and get tickets for Sunday night (b/c that is the only time i can make it this weekend and also because is performing then) Lemme know if you want to go too! (yes i know tickets are kind of pricey.
but these troupes are not well off and worth supporting. also, , the producer of the show and who i used to take classes with is awesome!) posted by on October 22nd, 2006

This is a painting that I bought from , an artist I discovered on myspace a while back and it finally arrived this week!
I love all of his beautifully strange and scribbly paintings, but this one in particular made me want to laugh and cry at the same time, so I had to get it. In addition to the paintings, you ll also find his work on skate decks, toys, tshirts, large scale urban murals and in a new book coming out this fall called .
oh and be sure to check out his music too.
he s got some enigmatically moody tracks to match his paintings . i like the one called :-) Man, I need to start taking a camera with me when I go out
Kurtis Blow, The Original Ladies Man, was at tonight. Imagine Frank Sinatra coming out for a revival except black, representing Harlem, and rapping.
The Ladies Man did a medly of some Old School hip hop classics and then did some of his own hits (1979!!!
). Kurtis highlighted the virtues of positive hip hop and brought on some old school breakers on stage to show how the B-Boys get down.
Huh, huh, huh, huh.
. yes y'all If I ruled the world, was king on the throne I'd make peace in every culture, build the homeless a home I'm not runnin, for Congress or the President I'm just here, to tell the world, how my story went You see - first it was a dream, I was livin in Rome And then I moved to London, bought a brand new home And everywhere I went, I drew lots of attention Like a stretch limousine, one of those new inventions posted by on July 26th, 2006
You want to turn away, but cha can t help looking.
Good thing YouTube wasn t around when I was 12.
(actually, it s not like a car wreck at all, cause these two guys make me unspeakably happy for some odd reason. i ve watched this video at least 10+ times!
yeah, i know I have unspeakably horrifyingly bad taste in music :-) Neat. is a recording service for subway and street buskers (people who perform in public spaces hoping to get your spare change) The service allows for buskers and spectators to call up on a cell phone or pay phone and have a performance recorded. Busker Du will record 3 minutes of audio which is then sent to the blog.
We all have our favorite street and subway musicians: the guy in the tunnel between 6th and 7th avenues on the L line that plays Beatles and Dave Clark Five songs, the tap dancers at Union Square, the red headed violinist, the guy that plays accordion and violin, perhaps one of those pan flute / cd player combo acts. Now, with the help of Busker Dial Up, you can preserve their music forever
Well sort of. Most of the audio is pretty scratchy and hard to hear kind of like the audio equivalent of a blurry camphone pic.
but still interesting, I think. I like this !

on his super cool musical instrument / physical interface Scrapple was so intriguing that I had to dig up more info on it (and some other related projects too!) One of the things I noticed after the performance was a scrap of paper by his table which was a musical score he had scribbled before the show (and which he didn t actually follow very faithfully but I still wish I d taken a photo of!) I do remember however, that the first two frames looked something like this.
What was interesting to me was that inspite of my total inability to sight-read traditional music (a source of frustration when I was taking piano lessons way back when), I could sort of hear in my head what kind of sounds his scribbles and shapes might produce. Maybe because the system was so literal - it was fairly simple and worked somewhat like this
There are dots and rectangles in the sketch above but any physical object or shape could be thrown or drawn on the table (a simple whiteboard) to produce a sound! I sort of lamented not having taken any photos of the thing afterwards.
Luckily, he has .
In the process of digging up information on this, I also found some other projects that look to be pretty neat.
It doesn t seem quite as elegant as Scrapple, but it s open source!
but I m going to check out these shows next week!
Projects by , , and will screen on Friday 4/28 (also at the Castro!
)
Presented as a series of audiovisual vignettes, (Golan Levin, Zachary Lieberman, USA 2004, demonstration by Golan Levin) reinvests the screen with our primal fascination with light and illusion. In (Sue Costabile, USA 2005), Costabile manipulates objects—and sings—to produce beyond-ethereal animated shorts. (Golan Levin, USA 2000-2004) is a live color-music performance that revives and updates a decades-old tradition of kinetic light performance.
(Golan Levin, Sue Costabile, USA 2005) treats a table s surface as if it were a kind of musical tablature, producing music in real-time from objects lying on it. Video projections of the table s surface produce a simple augmented reality, elaborated through luminous and explanatory graphics. Finally, (Sue Costabile, Laetitia Sonami, USA 2006) is a live cinematic thriller based on a script by poet Tom Sleigh about an ice delivery man whose job is to keep America cold.
Costabile and Sonami use a suitcase-sized foley stage, photos, drawings, videos, shadow theater and miniature lighting rigs to chronicle his saga.

Every so often a project comes along where you say Wow.
That is awesome. I could have done that. When I quit my job and was bumming around doing nothing I could have made the world a better place and created a project that pushes the envelope of software, art and civil society.
Today we honor Sven and his project. Word up, Sven. This is great stuff.
