A company contracted by the US Government to construct the fence along the US/Mexican border to keep out illegal aliens, .
After an immigration check in 1999 found undocumented workers on its payroll, Golden State Fence promised to clean house. But when followup checks were made in 2004 and 2005, some of those same illegal workers were still on the job.

In fact, U-S Attorney Carol Lam says as many as a third of the company s 750 workers may have been in the country illegally.
A little bit further down in the article is the reason why we have an unstemmed flow of illegal immigrants into the US and it has nothing to do with a fence.
It is exceptionally rare for those who employ illegal immigrants to face any kind of criminal prosecution, let alone jail time.

Why? Because crackdowns on illegal immigration would slow the economic powerhouse that is the new south and southwest. What s The Use?

- Is there a better Sunday night meal than a good old fashioned meatloaf with mashed potatoes? Didn t think so.
- I watched the season finale of tonight and I keep asking myself why this was the first year that I watched regularly.

What a fantastic show about the politics of living in a struggling urban center. Anyone else watch this show? Predictions for next season?

I ve got the first two seasons queued up on Netflix.

- Planning for is well underway and we ll be releasing a schedule of events within the next couple of weeks. We re working to establish our strategic partnerships and sponsorships while building up to what will be a fantastic celebration of Buffalo.

They also are working with the , , and several other organizations to make a better Buffalo. They are committed to making Buffalo a better place to live, work, and play.

They also offer low interest loans on small principal to help the working poor afford to purchase homes and offer flexible rehabilitation loans to support rebuilding Buffalo one house at a time, and one block at a time.
I decided to support this great Buffalo business by moving my Checking/Savings accounts from HSBC to GBSB. I also decided to utilize their residential lending department for a home equity line of credit on my home.

Everything was handled professionally, efficiently, and I m proud to support a company who believes in this city as much as I do.
That s the motto of new Buffalo hero, , who is scheduled to .
The downtown Buffalo landscape could see a dramatic change with the new owner of the Statler Towers proposing to construct a 48-story mixed-use tower along Elmwood Avenue.

Plans for the $361 million, privately-financed project are expected to be announced at a news conference, set for Wednesday morning. The tower will be the tallest in downtown both in terms of number of floors and square footage potentially 1.3 million square feet.

48 stories? Privately financed? Somebody pinch me, I must be dreaming!

For those of you not familiar with Issa, he has a track record of success in rehabilitating as well as building in Manchester and London in the UK.
BSC Group has a portfolio of over $400MM in mixed use and residential developments. They have the money and skillset necessary to make this project work.

The new tower will be a mixed use project that will feature 600,000 feet of sorely needed Class A office space and 700,000 square feet of hotel rooms and upscale condominiums. The building is already 17% leased and construction will begin once 40% of the building is leased to prospective tenants.
Who might those prospective tenants be?

George Hamberger, a broker with RealtyUSA Commercial Real Estate and Issa s local real estate specialist, said he has tentative contracts for 100,000-square-feet of the proposed 600,000-square-feet of office space.
Hamberger said he will be reaching out to non-local firms to help fill the building s tenant roster.
Our focus is on new jobs and new tenants for Buffalo and not stealing tenants from other (downtown) buildings, he said.

No, seriously pinch me. WNYMedia will try and be at the press conference tomorrow to get audio, video, and stills of the event. Unfortunately, most of our employees have jobs hopefully one of us will make it down there to cover the unveiling.

- Mrs. Geek and I are invited to a Halloween party this year and I have no idea what kind of costumes we should wear. I haven t dressed up for Halloween in roughly twenty years.

Ideas?
- The American Justice System in all of it s perverted glory; guilty on 19 counts of securities fraud, conspiracy, and insider trading; 5,000 jobs destroyed, $1BN in lost retirement money; a shaken confidence in the American market; and thousands of lives forever ruined and former Enron COO . Seem fair to you?

- Bush claims he never said we should stay the course in Iraq. Evidently, he believes the Internets are incapable of archiving information like when he said we should stay the course on . He probably also doesn t remember the thousands of times his lackeys in the Administration and the media used the term either.

So far, that s the damage at BuffaloGeek Central in Parkside. The snow keeps falling and the old elms and oaks that line my block are at the breaking point.
Insurance will probably cover my huge awning that just burst into shreds oddly enough, Kohler was going to be here on Saturday to pick it up and store it for the winter damn.

The two beautiful trees in my yard probably aren t covered by insurance. Oh well.
These were taken at various times between 6-9PM.

After 9PM, we got another three inches of snow and my and I were out with chainsaws and shovels cleaning up driveways and sidewalks.
We re now expecting another 6-8 inches overnight should be great fun in the morning.
The bonus to living on my street is that a high ranking city official lives here as well.

What does that mean? Frequent plowing and lots of tree cleanup! w00t
More pics in the AM.

For those of you who don t often check out the frontpage of our family of sites, .
Today, I lost my best friend, my secretary, my gardener, my biggest fan and supporter, a regular reader of our websites, my lunch date and most importantly my mother. I can take solace that her fight wasn t a along one and she suffered very little pain.

About 12 weeks from the first symptoms to today when she took her last breath shortly after 12:30 this afternoon.
Although I didn t know Joyce, she must have been a wonderful woman as she produced a fantastic young man in Marc. He and I have only known each other for six months but in that short period of time, I ve grown to respect him and appreciate his tireless devotion to his family, friends, and pursuit of truth in the media.

I can appreciate the relationship he had with his Mother because I am so close to my own Mom. Everyone who is lucky enough to still have their Mother with them should pick up the phone and call her or stop by her door to tell her how much you love her. You never know how short your time together might be, so make the most of the time you do have.

If you know Marc and would like to support he and his family in their time of need, please join the rest of the WNYMedia.net family as we pay our respects to a wonderful woman.

If you re interested in joining in the revelry, meet up with us at Pearl Street around 9:30 and we ll see where the night leads us .

From my beer loving friend, eac, comes this little from the middle east.
High up in the hills of the West Bank in mid-September, thousands of visitors arrived for a two-day village fair filled with music, folk dancing and local goods, from honey and oils to embroidery and olive-wood carvings. But the star attraction this year was a more surprising local offering: a German-style beer brewed here that bears the name of this small Palestinian village.

Located about 20 miles northeast of Jerusalem, Taybeh is a Christian enclave dotted with churches rather than mosques, but entirely surrounded by Muslim villages. The village festival is billed as an Oktoberfest, after the annual beer-lovers bash in Munich although it takes place in September so as to avoid clashing with the Muslim festival of Ramadan.
I don t want to say exactly that the Muslims enjoy the beer more than the Christians but they do, said Sayib Nasser, a member of the Fatah Party and deputy governor of the local council in nearby Ramallah.

Nasser, who is a Muslim, took part in the festival s opening ceremony. The festival has our support and our blessing, he said. We are proud of it.

Beer, oiling the machinery of peace for thousands of years
Earlier this year, Dustin Diamond (Screech from Saved By The Bell ) was . Now, he s back in the news as his stolen sex tape is about to be released.
Yes, that s right.

.
David Hans Schmidt, who has become famous in the sex tape industry by peddling videos featuring Paris Hilton, Colin Farrell and others, claims ownership to the Screech tape. It was shot in a hotel.

Diamond is holding the camera and narrating, as he engages two women in various combinations and positions.
The tape begins with Diamond in a bathtub, narrating what s to come. It ends with Diamond introducing one of the women to a Dirty Sanchez.

Suffice it say, it is unbelievably graphic.
As you know, any quality adult movie needs a catchy title. Think Crocodile Blondee , Forrest Hump , or Rambone .

So, I m holding a contest to come up with the best name for the Screech porn movie. Submit your suggestion and I ll pick a winner from the list. The winner gets an authentic t-shirt and assorted useless prizes from my attic.

It s been a busy week so posting has been light. The Dalai Lama visit, closing on a Home Equity Loan, bidding renovation work out to contractors, WNYMedia planning, , 2007 meetings, family stuff, and my actual job have kept me a bit occupied.

Mrs. Geek and I are going to for the weekend to celebrate our wedding anniversary and partake in what is colloquially referred to as a babymoon the last hurrah before Baby Geek arrives in December.
We re usually spontaneous on short trips but, any recommendations for restaurants, shows, or shopping in Toronto are graciously appreciated.

I haven t been to the TO in about a decade
Posting will be light over the weekend but, make sure to listen to Hardline with Hardwick and watch the Bills game. I expect a full report upon my return.
BTW, anyone up for a guest blogging job over the weekend?

    Paul? Rob? Salesman?

eac? EDIT: I just phoned in a donation of $375 from a group of local bloggers and members of the Buffalo Old Home Week planning committee.
If I haven t already, I ll make arrangements with all of you to pick up the checks.

Thanks so much for your support!
Larry Norton of 97 Rock kicked off his annual 28 hour radiothon yesterday morning to benefit the and I’d like to make a donation from the Buffalo Blogging community to support this very valuable charity.
We always say that we’re “New Buffalo” or “Our Buffalo” and we always step up to prove it.

Anyone want to join me in making a group donation to the Make-A-Wish radiothon? Your contribution can be as small as $5 or as big as you want it to be. You can post your donation amount in the comments section or send me an email with your pledge amount.

I ll collect the checks at the conclusion of the radiothon and donate them together. Your contributions will be tax deductible and go to support a wonderful cause.
I ll start it off with a contribution of $100.

97 Rock s 12th Annual Make-A-Wish Radiothon is Thursday and Friday, September 21st and 22nd.
Once again, Larry Norton will stay on the air for 28 straight hours and take your requests for any song with a pledge to Make-A-Wish of Western New York.
There is no charity that is more important to me than the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

Bearing witness to the incredible healing power on the soul of a child when a community pulls together to make their dreams come true is something that will change your life forever…the official mission statement reads as follows:
The Make-A-Wish Foundation grants the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions to enrich the human experience with hope, strength, and joy.
However, I interpret that mission a little differently
Make-A-Wish is an organization that allows children to be children…allowing them to dream and see that better days lie ahead. To see that the world cares for them and wishes for them to see past the burden of their illness.

It strengthens them as they continue their fight…it allows the families to see all the possiblities in life, rather than the impossibilities of their child’s illness.
The Western New York chapter grants wishes to local children using money raised in our community. Larry Norton of 97 Rock is an absolute pillar in our community when it comes to charitable contributions, fundraisers, and media support.

Whether or not you enjoy his show or the station, this is one of the most significant annual fundraisers in town.
Anyone else care to join me? Any amount you can contribute makes a difference.

Since , , and others have shared their personal stories of 9/11, I thought I d post mine as well but, it s a little different.
September 11th is a significant day for me in another way, it s also my wedding anniversary. Amanda and I were married on this day in 1998 and I can t imagine where the time has gone.

It seems like it was just yesterday that she walked down the aisle and said that she would spend the rest of her life with me.
Amanda is many things; beautiful, graceful, intelligent, talented, as well as being a creative and lyrical soul.
It s not easy being married to a guy like me.

I can be boorish, obnoxious, forgetful, wasteful, and generally dishevelled. However, Amanda handles all of my shortcomings with an uncommon sense of grace and understanding that allows me to simply be myself. I m a lucky man to have such a special woman to share my life with.

Someone once asked me what makes for a happy marriage. I m not sure there is an answer to that question, happiness is a tough thing to define, it just is. However, I define my marriage as happy because I truly cherish watching my wife drift into sleep every night and that the first thing I see every morning is her smile.

That s how I define happiness, another day of being in love.
She is my friend, my partner, and will soon give birth to our first child. We ve shared a long and wonderful journey over the last eight years and I look forward with great anticipation to the rest of our days.

Superintendent of the NY State Police Wayne Bennett, has just briefed the press that Ralph Phillips is cornered and contained in a wooded area that is one half mile over the PA Border.
Phillips was spotted in two different stolen vehicles today. When the NYS Troopers tried to apprehend him in the second vehicle, he jumped from a moving car, drew a weapon, took fire from the police and scampered off into the woods.

US Marshalls, FBI, PA State Police, NY State troopers, and local Sherriffs are currently on the case.
It should finally be over sometime today. Tune into or any of the local TV stations for updates.

EDIT: It s a clean sweep of the national cable networks as CNN, Fox News, and MSNBC are all carrying live coverage.
