The AMSA Jack Rutledge Fellowship was created in 2001 for a medical student or recent medical school graduate to focus full-time for one year on the strategic priorities of Universal Health Care and Eliminating Health Disparities. Universal Health Care: In a time of increasing insecurity, a rapidly changing economy, and skyrocketing health care costs, achieving health care for all is not just important, but imperative. Eliminating Health Disparities: Medicine has advanced to unprecedented heights, yet there are still enormous inequities by race, socioeconomic class, and other factors.
The Jack Rutledge Fellow has the opportunity to address these problems by working in three major areas:
EDUCATION
- You will be AMSA's resident expert on universal health care and health disparities, which means you will be in high demand by AMSA chapters and health advocacy groups. You will have the opportunity to travel around the nation to give talks, serve on panels, and attend conferences.
- You will have the opportunity to develop innovative health policy curricula by working with the AMSA Foundation and groups like the AAMC.
- You will maintain AMSA's extensive universal health care and health disparities websites and write new educational materials as you see fit.
- You will organize leadership trainings, such as the Universal Health Care Leadership Institute, as well as international study tours (the SeaCouver U.S.
-Canada study tour and the Europe study tour).
LEGISLATION
- You will have the opportunity to lobby Congress and work with Congressional health legislative aides to draft new legislation to expand health care access and eliminate health disparities.
- You will be able to look over various pieces of legislation and, in conjunction with the Legislative Affairs Director, determine whether AMSA should support them or not.
- You will work with various coalition groups to defend programs such as Medicare, Medicaid, and S-CHIP from harmful legislation.
MOBILIZATION
- You will work with other prominent health advocacy groups to build coalitions for universal health care and eliminating health disparities.
- You will mobilize medical students all around the country to do projects, rallies, and other events on universal health care and health disparities.
- You will connect medical students to other advocacy groups fighting for state-based universal health care initiatives.
- You will help organize AMSA campaigns, including the Health Care for America Campaign, Covering Kids and Families, and Cover the Uninsured Week.
