Entertainment Weekly's first Inspirations issue starts out with a definition: To inspire is to produce or arouse creative ideas and actions in others, whether contemporaries or future generations. To bring about innovations in one's chosen endeavor that elicit envy, admiration and (inevitably) imitation. To breathe life into something, just by being.

To do cool things, and to look cool doing them.
So, what inspires, say, Gwen Stefani? Her new single, "Wind It Up," was inspired by her obsession with "The Sound Of Music.

" "I'm like a Trekkie, but for 'The Sound Of Music.' The first time I ever went on stage, at a high school talent show, the dress that I made was the dress that Maria wears when she sings 'I Have Confidence.' The drop-waist tweed dress; I had that dress.

I made it," Stefani says.
And in her other business (Stefani oversees two fashion lines), her newfound fashion muse is Michelle Pfeiffer's drugged out gangster's moll in the 1983 movie "Scarface."
Let's go to the video archives!

Two years ago, actress Halle Berry told Oprah Winfrey (4 p.m. weekdays, WXYZ-TV, Channel 7) that when she turned 40 she would tell whoever she was dating at the time, "Hey, would you like to have a baby?

" Berry celebrated her 40th three months ago, so, Star magazine wonders in this week's edition, is a baby on the way for Berry and her Canadian model boytoy, Gabriel Aubrey?
With last Monday's show in L.A.

, singer-actress-personality Barbra Streisand's second good-bye forever tour formally ended. (You may recall the Detroit stop was erased due to poor response to her very expensive tickets.)
Forever for real this time?

Streisand says she may yet do more shows in Europe and is considering a tour in China. But, is that it? Is it over?

Dumb question. She confirmed only that it was "the last time I'm ever ..

. going to wear this dress."
Actress Liv Tyler says when she first saw the title of the script for her new film, "The Strangers," she thought it was a comedy.

Turns out it's a thriller about a couple trying to survive when three masked strangers invade their home.
"I had stacks of scripts on the plane," she said in a recent interview. "I liked the title of this one because it sounded like a comedy.

After reading the first three pages, I was stuck on the script and called my agent and said 'Please get it for me. I want to be in this movie.' "
She has been in Florence making "The Strangers," costarring Scott Speedman, since Oct.

10. Filming is expected to be finished Dec. 4 and the film is scheduled for release in October.

Reminder: Tyler, daughter of Aerosmith lead singer Steven Tyler, played the elf princess Arwen in "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy. Her screen credits also include "Jersey Girl" and "Armageddon."
A leading Kazakh writer has nominated actor Sacha Baron Cohen for a national award for popularizing Kazakhstan.

Novelist Sapabek Asip-uly called on the Kazakh Club of Art Patrons to give Cohen its annual award, according to a letter published by a Kazakh newspaper.
Cohen's fictional Kazakh character Borat "has managed to spark an immense interest of the whole world in Kazakhstan -- something our authorities could not do during the years of independence," said Asip-uly, who chairs the writers' guild.
Authorities in the ex-Soviet republic were enraged by the unflattering portrayal of Kazakh life in the spoof documentary, "Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit of Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan.

"
"If state officials completely lack a sense of humor, their country becomes a laughingstock," Asip-uly said.
