The Long Con

Ok, "Lost" has me a little lost. Just finished watching the last episode of Season 2. Lots of chaos and confusion, I must say.

The whole Desmond/ex-girlfriend thing is really weird and feels very out-of-place. The ex is some rich girl whose daddy won't let her be with Desmond, but she's also hired out some arctic freighter to track down something? Too many fragments and fractures to even guess at what the heck is going on.

(DON'T tell me the answers if you've been following Season 3. I'll wait for the DVD's.)
Yes, Missy, I'm still watching/liking "Lost".

:)
While watching "Lost", I was thinking about what it would be like to realize you're part of some demented psychological experiment. (That's one of my guesses as to what the island really is. Don't tell me if I'm right or wrong.

:)
There have been several movies out in the past decade where the protagonist is "enlightened" to the actual reality of his existence - that he's lived a whole life that isn't the real thing. There is another movie like that out right now ("Stranger Than Fiction"). "The Truman Show" and "Matrix" also come to mind.

And then there are movies that are not about hidden, unbelievable realities that are off our radar screen of possibility, but are about regular human interactions that are intentionally deceptive. (The movie, "Closer" is what to comes to mind first. Talk about deceptive relationships.

..) In "Lost", one of the episodes is called "The Long Con" where we see a main character con a woman over six months, building her trust, and then ripping the rug out from under her.

Cruel. I wonder about people who con other people - what makes them do that.
I just got a mailer from my bank.

Well, I don't believe it's actually from my bank because the word "bank" was spelled wrong. (Duh. If you're going to try to take me, at least spell the easy words right.

) I really wonder what kind of person is printing these mailers and sending them to people. What kind of people are they profiling as most likely to fall for the trick? Foreign sounding names?

Elderly people? Very young adults? Who?

It's interesting that there are so many movies made about con artists. Many heist movies are really con-artist movies. And it's interesting that there are so many successful movies about discovering that you're living a lie; there is a parallel existence that someone is withholding from you.

What does this say about human nature? People are obviously intrigued enough to keep watching things like this. Heck, I'M watching "Lost".

What have YOU seen that intrigued you in this vein of "The Long Con"? Heist movie? Con-artist movie?

Deceptive relationship TV show/movie? Parallel reality movie? Anyone reading anything like this?

Do movies accomplish deception themes better than books do? There is something about being fooled visually, to believe only what someone allows you to see..

.and nothing else.
