Julie Andrews said in a telephone interview today that she hasn’t yet heard “Wind It Up,” the Gwen Stefani hit that incorporates “The Lonely Goatherd” from her 1965 performance in “The Sound of Music.”
“But I’m very excited to hear it,” she said. “I’ve heard it’s just grand.
”
Not only does the hit from Stefani's new album “The Sweet Escape” borrow extensively from the song, just as her previous hit “Rich Girl” borrowed from “If I Were A Rich Man” from “Fiddler on the Roof,” it was also an inspiration for its video.
If you see it, you can see all the references,” Stefani told MTV News of her video. “I remember when I was a little girl and saw ‘The Sound of Music,’ it was such a huge inspiration for me.
It was a huge staple forever.”
In the video and live performance, Stefani dresses as Fraulein Maria and her Harajuku Girls dancers don the curtain-derived playclothes of von Trapp children. And Stefani has been everywhere lately doing the performance – on the Billboard Awards, American Music Awards and, most recently the other day on a new “Saturday Night Live.
”
“I’m so sorry I missed it,” Andrews said of the “SNL” appearance. “Maybe if there’s a rerun I can catch it. But I’m very excited to hear it.
I’m a huge fan.”
Does that open the door for a possible future duet on the tune involving Andrews, 71, and Stefani, 37? “If I can, I will,” Andrews said.
Andrews will be awarded a lifetime achievement award at the 13th annual Screen Actors Guild Awards to be shown on TNT and TBS Jan. 28, 2007.
