played two NYC shows in one day last week (Aug 3, 2006). That meant I got to hear them play the spectacular " " song three times. First they played it during their kick-ass (and packed) performance at Mercury Lounge.
Good thing it was kick-ass too because MTV's " " got it all on tape.
Later that night they played a free drunken afterparty-show at Pianos. I found out about the second show right before I got to Mercury Lounge where they also announced it to everyone.
It was at Pianos that I heard the song that made them famous again.
The third time I heard "Kissing Families" was later in the same Pianos set when Lexi Valentine from joined them on stage for an even more drunk, duet-version of the same song. Magneta Lane at Mercury Lounge earlier in the night.
They were the DJs at this Pianos afterparty.
Saturday: 7pm - Yeah Yeah Yeahs, 8:45 - Sonic Youth
"The sun had started to set, the heat of the day has lost its grip on the city, and thousands – 10, 12, 15 thousand — were filing peacefully into City Hall Plaza long before the headlining Yeah Yeah Yeahs were due to take the stage. All the makings of a perfect rock and roll evening were in place as Brooklyn’s TV on the Radio filled downtown with an eclectic mix of organic post-punk guitars and almost trance-y rhythms devoid of the electronic embellishments that are such of big part of the alterna-indie band’s studio sound.

The Oldham brothers, sitting three in a row with acoustic guitars and matching white chinos, opened the show with a set of well-selected covers.Their three voices crisscrossed and harmonized on numbers like "Tell Old Bill," a chronologyblurring traditional song about the death of the title character.
Will's voice was nuanced and haunted, rising above the others to punctuate certain phrases; Ned's was full of creaking country flourishes. The two seemed to treat the show as a learning opportunity for young Paul, the baby of the group and the least experienced performer. He sounded flat and shy as his brothers pushed him out of the nest on a few solo verses.

The next (Labor Day) party is on September 3, 2006. Musical guest: !
: Who books the DJs? What was your favorite live performance? Dream lineup?
GEORGIE SEVILLE: My dream band— or Iggy.
JUSTINE D: We only do Mofos on specific dates so the bands have to work around our schedule and it's hard to get everything organized a few months in advance. I'm still working on getting the Strokes.
That will hopefully happen soon.
MICHAEL T: I like to hire people I can potentially have sex with. Justine is a bit more professional.
I thought Andrew W.K. was pretty hilarious.
Dream band: the Cramps!
Still no CBGB show, but there are a bunch in Europe and California. All Cramps tour dates below.

"played" . I managed to catch their 2am "performance" at The Annex on Friday night (Aug 4, 2006). By "performance", I mean two guys standing behind a DJ booth pumping their fists in the air.
Sometimes one of them moved a knob while the other one aimed a spotlight at the crowd. To their left was a dude in a bear mask strumming a guitar. At first I thought it wasn't even plugged in, but then decided the bear WAS really playing, though barely.
The Teddybears might have some fancy friends and work some magic in the studio, but at The Annex on Friday night I couldn't help but feel like a participant in some major-label marketing scheme injected right into the middle of (I know, ). Oh yeah, there was a video screen in the background, but I could barely see it through all the smoke.
At least the Fat Baby show the night before (Aug 3, 2006) was billed as a listening party (well sort of --- an industry-only "DJ Multimedia performance").
I wasn't there, but one anonymous "industry insider" was, and they actually liked it. Here's their story..
..
Listening parties: an industry standard in which labels attempt to get writers, tastemakers and influencers out to hear their newest bands.
In the best case scenario, you get to leave work early to see the band perform live, or they come play a special show in your office. The worst case scenario is a dj playing the cd on repeat for three hours while you suck down free beer and lazily network. More often then not, it's the latter, and you leave questioning why you rushed over from work to see the same people you always do, to listen to a record you have had for two months.
Last night (Aug 3, 2006) was the Teddybears listening party at FatBaby. This upwards of 8 piece band from Sweden has been making in the past few weeks with their track , featuring Iggy Pop.
The details of the party were sketchy at best.
The main members of the band were there, they were going to be doing some performance, but to what capacity remained elusive. When I arrived, I saw a fog machine, vocoders and massive cdjs being set up, I knew we were all in for something special.
The members of the band have been in the states the last two weeks promoting the record.
As their manager explained to me, they were unable to bring the entire band over, so they decided to innovate.
Patrick Teddybear manned the wheels of steel and played the record straight through. As an extra flourish he laid over a Hot Chip worthy amount of fx, vocoder and other delicious beeps and bloops.
Jocke Teddybear, who is also in The Ceasers, danced with manic glee to every track, while banging along with a tambourine and manning the fog machine. While all this was happening upstairs, Klas Teddybear wandered around downstairs with a huge Teddybear's mask, drinking white wine with a very long straw.
While this was entertaining, what put it over the top were the visuals.
Not content with just being a band, the boys from the Teddybears are also visual artists and have created a visual loop that takes classic movies (Spinal Tap, Aliens, Scarface, etc) and placed their iconic Teddybear head on the main characters. It could have been the whiskey and gingers, but seeing the Queen Alien battle a Teddybear, or a Teddybear gundown wannabe drug lords, made the entire night incredibly enjoyable. It was great to look around the room and see the usually apathetic industry crowd craning their neck to see a giant Teddybear pull a tin foil wrapped cucumber our of its pants.
Overall, the night was great. The new record is fantastic and if every band could promote and get into these potentially boring events as much as The Teddybears did, then listening parties could take on a whole new attitude.

"What we are saying is that we can't let the SLA control this anymore," said Quinn. "They have done a pitiful job at closing down bad establishments in this city. Therefore we want and should have that enforcement power ourselves.
We want to stop the days when the West Side of Manhattan is more like the Wild West."
"Now, very soon we will have some of the toughest laws in the entire country and WE WILL MAKE SURE OUR KIDS IN OUR CITY ARE COMPLETELY SAFE when they enjoy what our city is known for, its nightlife," said Queens City Councilman Peter Vallone.
"We will work with the City Council to draft legislation that will increase the use of technology to root out underage drinking, increase the use of security cameras and hold establishments accountable when they break the law," the mayor's chief spokesman, Stuart Loeser, said in a written statement.
Ms. Quinn dismissed the privacy implications of the plan. "Cameras at places of public assembly are commoplace now," she said, "I don't believe there is any expectation of privacy as it relates to going to a club.

Missouri's Foundry Field Recordings are a four-piece that play sweet shoegazing guitar pop that sounds like Grandaddy (a lot) meets Nada Surf meets Flaming Lips at their most normal.

* There's a song off the latest Vitalic 12" called Bells. Friend and DJ Laz Casanova says, "Bells is a fast paced heavy distorted track (about 137 bpm) with opera-esque vocals by Linda Lamb that actually brings a decent balance to the song. Sticking true to its name the track does feature bells.
Not entirely crazy about this one but its high energy can probably rock the right crowd." [ ]
* New Blood Brothers tracks leaked. Their album entitled Young Machetes is due for release in the fall and was produced by John Goodmanson, (Blonde Redhead) and Guy Picciotto (Fugazi).

* Fans of Q And Not U should definitely check out John Davis' new band Georgie James. Davis acts alongside friend Laura Burhenn, to create music that could take Ian Mackaye/Amy Farina's The Evens down! [ ]
* One band who I think deserves more attention is Toronto's Tangiers (French Kiss).
I recently found some CBC Radio 3 Sessions (from 2 years ago) that are great. [ ]
* One of my favorite album's of this year, (so far) is Souls She Said's As Templar Nites (Dim Mak). It features singer Joe Cardamone and guitarist Don Devore of The Icarus Line.
Imagine The Icarus Line becoming some sort of schizophrenic, distorted, yet somewhat happy dance projecy. [ ]
