SAN MARCOS---- When Gene Bonk's golf clubs were stolen from the trunk of his car nearly 20 years ago, he never imagined what his life would become as a result.

Turns out that random petty theft introduced the middle school math teacher to the world of club fitting, a small but growing sector of the golf industry that today recognizes Bonk as one of the best in the business.
"I went down to the old Brass Tee (in Escondido), I took one swing and after 30 seconds I was done," recalled Bonk, a part-time teacher at Grace Lutheran School in Escondido.

"I didn't even hit a ball or swing on a mat. I thought that was interesting. But it got me interested in custom building.
