"An S Club 7 for twentysomething Americans, Seattle’s U.S.E.

(short for ) make high-energy dance-pop from grungy guitars and filter-house vocoders. Unabashed, unironic—they’re occasionally unstomachable too. Diehards disagree; the guy once said to me on a message board, 'They could totally beat your favorite band in an energy-off.

' Well OK! With Candy Whales." [ ] ( )
"USE is easily one of the top 5 live acts I've ever seen.

Going to see Sufjan Snoozans instead of them would be insane. USE will bring the joy." Everyone needs to see them and have their mind BLOWN.

"Here are some blurry camera photos of The Rakes brilliant performance at Cinespace. In order to actually see them, one had to wait through one of the worst bands with one of the worst names in the world, The United States of Electronica (I'd link to them, but I'd rather not encourage them any further). The Rakes did redeem the night wonderfully.

play in NYC tonight (Oct 7, doors 7PM)
The comments section of has spawned some discussion about the October 5th show at Irving Plaza in NYC...

" , said Bob in some recent interviews on this tour, will not be reuniting. Judging from the attitude displayed at his recent Mercury show, he's not too interested in burying the hatchet either.
Bob's show at Irving was incredible.

New songs sounded great, and the classics were, well, classic." [ in ]

$100 great seats no party!

All but $150 of each $250 and $500 seat is tax deductible.
Party at O'Neals' 49 W. 64th Street.

We thank O'Neals' for their generous support of this event.
was the first group I saw play at (Sept 29, 2005). They opened for Antony The Johnsons to a capacity crowd at Montreal's .

I've seen them a bunch of times. This was the best one. No CocoRosie show ever seems to have the same linuep.

They're always pulling in special guests and friends. This one was limited to the Cassidy sisters and one other (rapping/beatboxing) person (top pic, right). Antony didn't join them on stage for , though they did later join him on stage.

Sometimes you need to get away for a better perspective.
a) The crowd was going nuts for them. (not everyone's a hater)
b) Montreal crowds generally go more nuts.

(not everyone's a New Yorker)
played Webster Hall in NYC last night (Oct 5, 2005). It was their second night in a row at the same venue, and the third time since the club started having "Bowery Presents" indie rock shows around a year ago.
They've upgraded the Mariner's Revenge whale act where the crowd screams as they're swallowed by the whale.

* They played a cover of E.L.O.

With her signature tech-house-funk mix and live vocal stylings, prolific DJ/producer Miss Kittin has been on the vanguard of the whole nouveau-electro movement around the world.

Her sold-out DJ set at Canal Room last year was off the hinges with fans glued to the dancefloor for hours and celebrities in the house including Boy George. Guest DJs Dirty Dietz (Refuse! / All Wrong) and James F!

@#$%^ Friedman (Refuse! / All Wrong / Defend Music) will supply additional beats and dancefloor action.
@ Canal Room, New York NY
Nikka Costa dropped into everyones live with her vivid, vivacious and altogether funky debut album Everybody Got Their Something and hasn’t miss a beat since then.

The year was 1992 when Giant Step presented Jamiroquai’s debut show in the US and their long overdue return to these shores is the perfect way to toast 15 years of funkin’.

Jay Kay Co emerged as one of the leaders of the nu-funk movement in the post-acid jazz era and their danceable disco grooves and sci-fi funk harmonies are all over their new album Dynamite. New York City is gearing up to host two nights of electrifying performances and your attendance is requested.
@ Cielo, New York NY
Ben Watt’s most recent sets started blending new electro-minimalism with his trademark deep tender-tough house sound, creating a whole new journey that is refreshing and rocking.

Come down to the intimate club, Cielo, to pay respect to the forward thinking DJ and to hear what sort of boogie beats he has in his bag of tricks this time. And be sure to fetch your tickets beforehand to avoid the block-stretching lines at the door.

Next year I'll be more prepared. My experience was limited to a short stay in Montreal, a few shows, and a lot of sightseeing. The five day festival ran from Wednesday September 28th- Sunday October 2nd.

I arrived Thursday evening in time to catch CocoRosie and Antony, and was on my way back to NYC by 11 AM Sunday morning. I've got pics and stuff to post, but in the meantime here's two things I learned in Montreal..

.
have reached Green-Day-Kanye-West-Kelly-Clarkson status in their hometown of Montreal (and ). I heard them in a souvenir store in the touristy section called , twice blaring out of car windows, and once on the radio in a cafe.

The cafe was tuned in to Montreal's English-speaking top-40 station. was guest-hosting the day's countdown.
Montreal loves French-Canadian Celine Dion.

("The youngest child in an enormous French-Canadian family, Celine Dion grew up performing with her parents and 13 siblings in the family-owned piano bar." [ ]) She was actually born in Charlegmane which is right near Montreal. She was married in Montreal too.

(You can visit the church). One record store literally devotes half the store to Celine memorabilia. I wish I took a picture of the shrine.

There were glass cases full of CD's on display, binders full of magazines, awards, life-size posters, EVERYTHING. Another CD store specialized in heavy metal and classic rock. No Wolf Parade.

No Madonna. No Kanye West. There was lots of Danzig and Dylan, and.

..a large Celine Dion section.

Neither of these artists actually played Pop Montreal.
I asked NYC's a few questions about their opening slot at tonight's , how their lives were affected by Katrina, CMJ, and their upcoming residency at ..

.
BV: You're playing a Katrina benefit at Bowery Ballroom with Sufjan Stevens, Adam Green, Grizzly Bear, and Akron/Family. Besides being a good deed, it must be a pretty exciting show to be involved with.

How did it come about?
OP: Yeah, we are really excited about being part of this bill. Peter DiBari at who organized the show, knew we spent August recording in Louisiana and that we wanted to do anything we could to help out.

BV: Speaking of Katrina, I heard the hurricane personally affected Other Passengers. Can you tell us about that?
OP: We spent the entire month of August recording our first full-length with producer Grant Curry at his studio, Music For Chameleons in Ponchatoula, LA.

It's about 25 miles north of New Orleans. We finished about 5 days before Katrina hit but he and his wife were forced to evacuate. We actually established some strong ties with some locals that we met while there and felt apart of the community by the time we left, so we were fairly devastated by the magnitude of the events that followed.

Grant had just begun mixing the recordings when he had to take off - all they could take was their pets, a couple of guitars and our masters. He called us up concerned about how Katrina threw off the production schedule..

.and this while he didn't know if his studio was washed away! We were just glad to hear he was safe.

Thank God they were relatively lucky and suffered only minor damage to the studio and even their home in New Orleans. He just recently got power again and he's back to mixing..

.talk about dedication. Grant and everyone me met down there have been incredible to us.

There is definitely a bond between us and the camp down there because of what it represented from both a life and music perspective.
BV: I also heard you were playing CMJ and then not playing CMJ. How did you get selected to play CMJ, and then what happened?

OP: We were accepted despite not having a label to really push for us or put us on their label showcase night. We then had quite a streak of bad luck after finishing the recording, what with Katrina, then Billy our singer getting tonsillitis the week of our CMJ show and Travis our guitarist is in a cast because of still not fully diagnosed infection in his leg. We were extremely excited because of the fact that Brooklyn Lyceum is an incredible venue.

It's got more character than most clubs in NYC. But we had to pull out because he Billy was incredibly ill and couldn't even speak let alone sing.
BV: You have an October residency coming up at Pianos.

I believe (pre-Pitchfork). How does one end up with one of these residencies?
OP: We had been talking about doing it for a while but we were focused on writing and recording.

The timing for October just worked out for everybody. I think going through the recording process the way we got to, just an intense solid month of eating, sleeping and breathing the band has taken us to that proverbial next level. It was a dream realized to be able to work that way without the distractions of day jobs and just New York City in general.

See Other Passengers tonight (Oct. 3, 2005) @ Bowery Ballroom and then every Tuesday night in .
Stay tuned for MP3s from their new album.

In the meantime, .
