Rescue teams Tuesday arrived at a site in central Indonesia where authorities believe passenger jet crashed a day earlier, however it is unclear if the plane or any survivors had been found.. Capt.
Hartono, a spokesman for Adam Air, said the search and rescue team found the site, recovered 90 bodies, and found 12 survivors. However, other reports quoting transport officials, said the crash site has not been found and disputed the reports of 12 survivors.
The Adam Air Boeing 737 dropped off radar Monday while on a flight from Surabaya to Manado on Sulawesi island, an airline spokesman told CNN.
It had originated in Jakarta.
The jet -- carrying 96 passengers and six crew members -- is believed to have crashed near Polewali village in western Sulawesi province, Hartono said.
Three of the passengers aboard the plane were Americans, according to the airline and the U.
S. Embassy in Jakarta.
The pilot sent out a distress signal Monday before the airline lost contact with the plane, Indonesia's transport minister told an Indonesian radio program.
The airline set up an information center for families of passengers.
The plane was heading to Manado on Sulawesi island, the airline said. It had originated in Jakarta with a stopover in Surabaya, on Java Island.
Setyo Rahardjo, chairman of Indonesia's National Transport Safety Committee (NTSC), said the plane took off from Surabaya at 2:07 p.m. (2:07 a.
m. ET) and was supposed to land in Manado at 3:15 p.m.
The U.S. National Transportation Safety Board said it was sending a team to Indonesia to assist in the investigation.
Meanwhile, Indonesian rescue teams are still searching for hundreds of people missing after a ferry sank off the coast of Java on Friday. The ferry went down in rough seas and was not overloaded, according to Indonesia's transport minister.
