Making New Year's resolutions for myself is too disappointing, so this year I only made one (to speak more slowly, if you must know) and made ten for other people. It was easier and more fun, and I think everybody should do it. So, for the year of 2007, be it resolved: 1.
That the Placebo finds a home -- and that the home is comfortable, designed to host live music, and is, most importantly, permanent. Won't someone please think of the children? 2.
That more local bands put out records and decide to tour, if only so we can live vicariously through them and tell our friends who live in Teeming Metropolises ldquo;you HAVE to go see this band! rdquo; 3. That nothing like the following real life exchange between myself and a clerk at one of our county's beloved independent records stores will happen this year (I still can't believe this really happened): Me: So, is there anything interesting out today?
Him: Nope, I haven't seen anything good in quite a while. 4. That posters for shows would go up earlier than two weeks before the scheduled date.
This isn't a resolution for everybody -- some of you are doing a great job at this but,
com at 5:00 p.m. does not equal good publicity.
5. That the shows at the Arkley Center will not be as lame as I think it might be. (Let me go ahead and address the objections to this one right off the bat: for me to suggest that the Arkely Center is or will be ldquo;lame rdquo; is patently unfair.
From the outside, the place looks fantastic, and I'm sure the inside will be lovely as well. But for all my pretensions of small-c catholic taste, I can't truthfully say that I'll be lining up to see Kenny Rogers, Jim Brickman, or the Gaitlin Brothers. There are other acts booked, and surely more will be announced, but for now I remain staunchly unenthused about the effect of this new venue on the music scene 'round these parts.
But that's just one jaded 20something's opinion.) 6. That KKDS-FM actually starts having real live DJs and shows on its frequency -- not that I haven't been enjoying that Portishead CD (among others) they've been playing.
7. That the house-show scene continues to grow and thrive (and that more people invite me to their house shows), and that whoever's in charge of it fixes the ArcataDIY Web site. 8.
That Death Cab for Cutie plays a secret show in Humboldt and stays at my house. (A columnist can dream, can't he?) 9.
That MySpace dies a horrible, painful -- but quick -- death. 10. That my favorite local band, the Great Salvation, comes back.
What are your New Year's resolutions for other people? Tell me . Now playing: The Decemberists, ldquo; The Crane Wife.
