KELLEY L. CARTER: 5 downtown hot spots
January 5, 2007BY KELLEY L. CARTER
This weekend, thousands of new faces will be in town, gearing up for the North American International Auto Show, which begins Sunday for the media and Jan.
13 for the public.
That means people will be out and about after the action ends at Cobo. Automotive types, journalists and people just looking for a good time will be taking over downtown hotels and seeking a place to get out and get down.
Fortunately for them -- and for those of us who live and party here all year -- there's a smorgasbord of places to check out.
Fifth Avenue Downtown: The bar, which is inside Comerica Park, is one of the hottest in downtown Detroit, with nice pool tables, huge fish tanks and a great view. On weekends, there's usually live music.
On Saturday, you can check out one of Detroit's all-time great DJs: Jeff Mills, a.k.a.
the Wizard.. After the auto show press days, people head here for private parties.
Fifth Avenue is open nightly from 5 p.m. and goes until 2 a.
m. 2100 Woodward. 313-471-2555.
Detroit Beer Co.: If you're an auto person with a sports gene, you'll want to go to this downtown bar, where you'll be entertained by the four plasma screens, two big screens and 25 monitors. It will be running a couple of beer specials and a couple of tequila specials.
There are also dinner specials every weekend. Unless you're in the bathroom, it's hard to miss the action. 1529 Broadway.
313-962-1529.
Proof: This martini lounge came alive during the Super Bowl and has been pulling in people ever since. Tonight, the entertainment is the Groove Scoundrels, which spins '70s funk and soul.
On Saturday, Mike and Guy spin light hip-hop and house music -- no worries, it's not loud and obnoxious stuff. 2001 Woodward. 313-309-3200.
No cover.
Centaur: This martini lounge (great food, too) was one of the hottest spots during Super Bowl XL. Go there now to check out where the hottest people in sports and entertainment hung out not even a year ago.
On Saturday, DJ Top Kat will spin a mix of anything from Bill Withers to the Temptations to Depeche Mode. It's cigar-friendly. 233 Park Ave.
313-963-4040. Never a cover.
Prive Smallz Ultralounge: How cool is this?
Formerly, it was the London Chop House -- once a favorite spot among Detroit's automotive elite. Earlier this year, it was turned into a plush cigar bar and lounge that hosts weekly live entertainment. That alone should pique your interest.
This weekend, it's holding Fabulous Friday, which means there's no cover for women and drink specials until midnight. DJ Lutz spins tonight and the party starts at 9 p.m.
On Saturday, the club is having Seductive Saturday, with no cover for women and the first 50 women getting champagne. DJs Tink Thomas and Al Ester will spin. 155 W.
Congress. 313-965-6560.
