The celebration leading to the 30th anniversary of Elvis\' death on Aug.16 begins today with four days of activities, including lots of Elvis music and a meeting of Presley fan club officials from around the world. But Elvis actually spent his last birthday on Jan. 8, 1977, at his desert home in Palm Springs.
That house on Chino Canyon Drive was recently purchased by former Desert Sun racing columnist Reno Fontana, who will be in Memphis for the birthday celebration. He doesn\'t plan to open his house until August. The lone Elvis celebration in Palm Springs will be at the Elvis Honeymoon House on Ladera Circle.
And it, too, will be the precursor to a bigger Elvis celebration. The 40th anniversary of Elvis and Priscilla Presley\'s honeymoon night at that house will be feted by its owner, Leonard Lewis, the weekend of May 1. The party this weekend will feature a concert on Saturday by Elvis tribute artist James King and Rockabilly Hall of Famers Glen Glenn and Tommy Sands, the man Elvis\' manager, Col.
Tom Parker, once tapped to replace Elvis. Sands starred in the Elvis vehicle, \"The Teen Idol,\" in 1957 after Parker wouldn\'t let Elvis make the TV movie based loosely on his life. Sands went on to star with Annette Funicello in \"Babes in Toyland\" and married and divorced Nancy Sinatra.
It\'s only fitting that Elvis\' birthday be celebrated in Palm Springs, said friends who can\'t be here this weekend but were with him at his last birthday.
