Who's the Newsmaker of the Year? You decide!
They're the ones who made the most headlines, captured the most attention, and through their follies made us all feel a little bit better about ourselves.

Now it's time for you to help us determine our first annual Newsmaker of the Year. The nominees are:

  • Mel Gibson . His drunken anti-Semitic rant put the "Mad" back in Mad Max, and when no one else would, he offered a shoulder for fellow hatemonger Michael Richards to cry on.

  • Britney Spears . The country bumpkin lowered the bar with an embarrassing interview with Matt Lauer (quit snappin' your gum, Brit!), and then the mother of two lowered it even further by being photographed sans underwear three days in a row.

    Upside: She dumped K-Fed !

  • Madonna . She's made up her mind, and she's keeping her Malawian baby, despite the media's endless scrutiny of her adoption.

Also mounted some tour Detroiters could only watch on TV.

  • Pete Doherty . The British rocker was arrested more times than we can count -- and we can count pretty high -- and, for all his troubles, won back the affection of Kate Moss .

    Impressive.

(Note: Write-in votes for Gary Busey will not be counted.) Voting closes Dec. 18, and we'll announce the winner in our year-end Newsmakers wrap-up.

    Vote early and often!
Less than a week after filing for divorce from Pamela Anderson , Newsmaker of the Year candidate Kid Rock was spotted partying in Las Vegas over the weekend with pals Uncle Kracker , Kenny Chesney and Shooter Jennings , TMZ reports. Rock was photographed with a blonde babe hoisted on his shoulders whilst wearing a T-shirt that read, "Bro's before ho's.

    "

  • Newsmaker of the Year candidate Pete Doherty avoided jail time Monday in a London courtroom, where he was fined $1,525 for possession of heroin and crack cocaine. Yeah, that'll teach him.
  • It floats!

CBS announced Monday that David Letterman has signed a contract with the network to stay on the air until 2010.

  • Jay-Z is one of Barbara Walters ' "10 Most Fascinating People of 2006." The un-retired rapper will appear on Walters' annual special, airing Dec.

12 on ABC; no telling yet if he'll cry during the interview. Also appearing are Andre Agassi , Patrick Dempsey and Vogue editor Anna Wintour .
