Published December 19th, 2006 in , , , I don t know if I m getting old, or if the music industry is getting worse, but I only purchased 6 full albums this year (all off iTunes, sorry , your prices are too high). One of the albums is a live album of a concert that took place 10 years ago, another is a collection of b-sides and not even a real studio album, yet another is a live album from a band that broke up 5, 6, 7(?) years ago, and yet another is not on my list of the best (sorry Killers, loved Hot Fuss, Sam s Town, not so much).

With that said, I was able to cobble together a list of 3 albums I bought to label my Best of 06, three I don t own (yet) that I think are right up there from what I ve heard of/off them, and 23 songs from albums I don t have that are my favorites of the year. So to start, the top 3 (of the 6) albums I did buy this year:
Recorded in November of 1996 on the steps of the Sydney Opera House, this was the final concert by the legendary (and my favorite) band, Crowded House. Also released is a special two disc DVD to mark this 10th anniversary, especially poignant is the commentary that accompanies the DVD in light of the recent death of drummer .

I had to buy this one via import since it is not available in the US until January, which I guess makes it a 2007 album and technically ineligible for this list, fuck it, I ll just put it on next year s list too.
Love, love, love this album. Heard them on and immediately launched iTunes and downloaded the album.

The Chicks are great, I m glad they are sticking to their guns and not letting the red-staters scare them into toning down their politics. I bought the album basically to support the Chicks, and was happy to find that I loved it.
Peer pressure basically led to this purchase, I ve been a bit sour on the last few efforts by the Chilis but all the endless media talk about this being their best ever made me bite.

I m glad I did, this is the best of the Chilis I used to love in high school with an updated sound that doesn t smack of old men trying to keep up with today s kids.
Now if I do get any gift certificates to brick and mortar music retailers this Christmas, these 3 are on my list of what to pick up:
Unlike Justified I m not embarrased to say I like this one. The really does have some talent, if Christina Aguilera would get her act together, those two would be the break out talents that made the whole bubble gum/boy band era worth the trouble.

The Pet Shop Boys first live album, recorded in May of this year, this one might also be an import only. I ve heard a track with Robbie Williams and one with Rufus Wainwright, and I must say, I really like them. The orchestral accompaniament could have been hokey, but I like it.

I was turned onto Mika by the . Arjan offered two or three tracks for download and I really liked them, Definately need to pick up this album.
