Is the latest XL Recordings signing and made a few ripples on the scene in 2006 with his debut single 'Riverside' the video for which somehow or other featured the face of a famous fan: Fearne Cotton (yep that's her from TOTP). He's since taken his modern folk songs with sharp-stories about Milkmaids, Emperor's servants and beer-mat world domination on the road with the likes of Mystery Jets, Fields (on a DiS tour, no less), Beirut, Tilly the Wall and Jamie T. 2007 looks set to be the year the Medway-born songwriter arises from the Nambucca scene and into unsuspecting record collections.
Does metaphor-strung monologues over her garageband tracks inspired by M83, Bjork, Patrick Wolf and The Kills. Her homebrew of shoegaze, poetry (referencing anything from Audrey Tautou to Sonic the Hedgehog) and electronica has featured on full pages in NME and Loud Quiet magazines and her songs have been played alongside CSS, Postal Service and Patti Smith on specialist radio shows as far away as New Zealand. She also features in a forthcoming Guardian feature alongside fellow unique and interesting ladies who're all tipped for 'things' in 2007, despite the fact she's only uploaded a few demos to myspace and played 4 gigs with a karaoke twist.
Her first show was for DiS back in the summer and caused a mixture of love and hatred on the DiS boards. New genres may need to be created (blogtronica?) to file her debut single which is due via the Drowned in Sound Digital Singles Club in the spring.
Who'd have thought a Londoner could - possibly-unconsciously - take influence from both the sounds'n'style of Joanna Newsom and Regina Spektor, yet add more violin than piano and make something truly unique and special sounding. Founded and runs DrownedinSound.com and the Drowned in Sound label which is home to Martha Wainwright, Brett Anderson, Metric, Jeniferever, Blood Red Shoes and released (debut) singles by Bat for Lashes, Les Incompetents, Emmy the Great and Kaiser Chiefs.
Expect to hear his favourites from 2006 and music due in 2007 plus probably some Elliott Smith. DiScuss: See you there? Add it to your gig calendar by .
