Entertainment highlights during the week of Oct. 29-Nov. 4:
1938: The radio play "The War of the Worlds," starring Orson Welles, aired on CBS.

Using fake news bulletins and simulated on-scene reports to portray an invasion by Martians, the broadcast sparked panic among listeners who thought the dramatized events were authentic.
1957: Two future No. 1 pop songs were released: "Great Balls Of Fire" by Jerry Lee Lewis and "At The Hop" by Danny and the Juniors.


1969: Elvis Presley had his first No. 1 single in seven years with "Suspicious Minds."
1970: Neil Diamond received a gold record for "Cracklin' Rosie.

1970: Singer Michelle Phillips of The Mamas and The Papas married actor Dennis Hopper. They divorced after eight days.
1972: James Taylor and Carly Simon got married at Taylor's New York apartment.

They announced their marriage that night at Taylor's concert at Radio City Music Hall.
1975: "Good Morning America" premiered on ABC, with hosts David Hartman and Nancy Dussault.
1981: The TV comedy "Gimme A Break," starring Nell Carter, made its debut on NBC.


1988: Singer Debbie Gibson held a seance at her Halloween party to contact Liberace and Sid Vicious.
1996: The Notorious B.I.

G. and Faith Evans became parents to a son, Christopher Wallace.
2002: Jam Master Jay of Run-DMC was shot and killed at his recording studio in New York.

He was 37.
2004: Travis Barker, drummer of the rock band (+44), married former Miss USA Shanna Moakler in Santa Barbara, Calif. They have since split up.
