Starring John Lennon, Yoko Ono, Gore Vidal. Directed by David Leaf and John Scheinfeld.
SUCH is the scale and cosiness of The Beatles industry these days that it's sometimes easy to overlook the fact that there was a time when John Lennon was regarded as crazy and probably dangerous.

That was certainly the view held by the Nixon administration in America when Lennon and Yoko Ono, pictured right, were living in New York in the early Seventies and consorting with political activists such as Angela Davis, and Bobby Seale of the Black Panthers.

The Vietnam War was at its height and many American young people felt that they were at war at home too, with members of the Black Panther party and anti-war protesters actually getting shot and killed by representatives of a criminal government, soon to become embroiled in the Watergate scandal.
That's the backdrop for this fascinating documentary, boasting a soundtrack of Lennon's own music and with access, granted by Ono, to some never-before-seen footage.

It's by no means the hagiography that such authorised status can often lead to but Lennon emerges as a principled, funny, and extraordinarily charismatic man who refused to be silent in the face of injustice.
There's also interviews with key players of the time.
The film captures a public and private Lennon many viewers may not know and it's an instructive look at a time that has worrying echoes in today's world.
