Feisty Dennis Wise was hired Tuesday as manager of Leeds United.
Wise, 39, succeeds Kevin Blackwell, who was fired Sept. 20.
"I'm aware that he may not be everybody's cup of tea, but this is not a popularity contest," Leeds chairman Ken Bates said of Wise.
"It's a question of the right man to resolve a serious situation."
Leeds sits 23rd out of 24 clubs in the League Championship, just one point ahead of last-place Hull in the division below the English Premiership.
Wise resigned as manager of Swindon Town to accept the job and brings assistant coach Gus Poyet and goalkeeping coach Andrew Beasley with him to Leeds.
"They injected enthusiasm and a new level of fitness and professionalism into the team, and helped create an atmosphere of positivity in and around the County Ground," Swindon said in a statement.
"Dennis and Gus were both offered improvements to their Swindon Town FC contracts, but they felt that the opportunity to manage at a higher level was the best move for both their careers and their families at this time.
"
Wise wore 21 caps for England, but the former midfielder is best known as a captain with Chelsea, for whom he scored 76 goals in 445 matches and won FA Cups in 1997 and 2000.
Wise also played for Southampton, Wimbledon, Leicester City, Millwall and Coventry City.
He signed with Swindon on May 18.
Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech is on the slow road to recovery after returning home from the hospital Tuesday. Dennis Wise was hired Tuesday as manager of Leeds United, succeeding Kevin Blackwell, who was fired Sept. 20.
